The Dealer Says !!!!!

That if the rear diff fluid is not changed out on the 15,000 mile schedule in the maintenance book "because of the special anti spin stuff" then they (dealer) will not honor a warranty problem on the rear diff in the 7/70 plan. Anyone else heard of this ??????????

The recommended maintenance for Schedule B says 15k change out the rear end fluid, which is synthetic from the factory. There is no Special Anti-Spin stuff in these rear ends. The service writer (dealer) just giving you the standard bs line.

Just change it out yourself with Valvoline, Mobile, Redline, or Amsoil 75w-90, keep the receipts, and your covered. The gaskets are reusable...so the only cost is for the fluid and a little time under your truck! I'll be changing mine again (30K service) in about another 3k miles. I change out the frt end, 6spd trans, and transfer case at the same time.

Is changing the diff oil that easy?
I'm assuming I would lossen the cover to allow the oil to drain. Remove cover get out any gook then refill with oil? About how much. Sorry to ask a newb question like this by 15k is right around the corner for me.

Chevy uses the same axle and they don't have to change it at all, just check the level. If its the same axle in the Ram, why do we have to change it every 15k. Fluid is like $18/qt. Have to do front and rear diffs and gaskets? Seems excessive to me.

75W90 Valvoline Full Synthetic GL5 can be bought at $6.77 per quart here in my hometown. The gaskets are re-usable also. I'm not going to let $47.39 and a little time & effort every 15k miles or so stand in the way of either longevity or a warranty issue for me.

I'm probably going to change the diff fluid every 50-60K miles or so. I've never had a vehicle that I have changed as frequently as 15K. Now if I was fording streams and burying my truck in mud holes, I could see changing the fluid more frequently. Having to dump the lube in 2 diffs every 15K just seems pretty wasteful to me.

I'm pretty sure there are a few other members on here who haven't done the 15K change interval on the axles. It's all a matter of personal preference.

I also thought that the manual says to change fluid every 15k. Then I read the whole manual. I quote from page 350 in my 04 owners manual: "Drain And Refill.
Vehicles operated in normal service do not have regularly scheduled oil changes. If fluid has become contaminated with water or subjected to sever service, follow the recommended change intervals in Maintenance Schedule 'B' in Section 8 of the manual."
Take it for what its worth!

Yeah, 15K is a joke, not sure who was smoking what when they put that in the manual. If you fall into sched B, best do it every 15K if you want warranty coverage. Use any GL-5 Lube and keep the reciepts. If they force you use their oil to remain in compliance, file a complaint with the FTC.
