Dead lift pump? Help me diagnose please!

I was on my way to work this morning and my truck died. It had been running for about 20 minutes up till then. It was 7 degrees out, and I had the proper dose of PS anti-gel in the fuel. I pulled the fuel filter out expecting to see it waxed over, but good fuel ran out of it. Fuel runs out of the water drain also. It will start and run for 20 seconds if I let it sit for a few minutes. It sounds like the lift pump is running when I turn the key on. Dodge diesel tech said over the phone that it sounds like the lift pump. I towed it there, they will look at it Monday. It is still under the engine warranty, and has the original canister mounted pump. 04, no engine mods except for rocktech sensor. Also no codes on the odometer. What do you all think? Fuel lines frozen? Lift pump?

On a side note, I want to commend Performance Dodge in Lincoln NE for treating me right (to this point anyway) and setting me up with a new 06 cummins as a loaner. Part of the Business Link service.

Thanks for any help.

It will be covered under warranty and you will get the intank retrofit kit installed if it is the lift pump.

Thanks for the replies. I tried the key thing to get the codes, it just said "done", then ---------, then "done" again. I don't know what that means. So does everyone think lift pump? Any other ideas?

There is also a fuel heater on the side of the filter to keep the wax build up down, I borrowed the Dodge service manual from work. Good stuff in it.

Sounds like the lp. READ and FAMILIARIZE yourself with your warranty information on the Cummins BEFORE you go pick it up. Have the warranty information on your person when you pick it up so you can prove to the service manager that you do not owe them the 100.00 deductible they MIGHT try to charge you.

It only throws that code if the lift pump is an open circuit, you can have a pump that is electrically working but is not mechanically building pressure. That is usually how they fail anyway, slowly pumping less volume until it won't start.

yea that makes sense....

hook up a pressure gauge then to test it. Now that I have one, i never want to drive again without one!

Everyone who said "lift pump" gets a gold star! I Stopped by the dealership this morning, and it was being worked on. I walked in the back door and talked directly to the tech. He was just ready to drop the tank. Said it was pumping next to nothing. He answered a lot of questions and was really knowledgable.

It should be done by noon today, and everything is covered by warranty, no deductible. I do wish they could put an aftermarket pump (walbro) on, but that's not gonna happen. He did say that they have had much better luck with the new design since it came out. When I asked about fuel pressure guages he said it would not be a bad idea.

I don't recall ever reading about a failure of an in-tank pump on here either. So far my stocker on the filter housing is running fine, but i foresee a replacement coming pretty soon. (not intank)
