how is it damaged?

yeah, the condensor is pretty exposed in the location.. many have come up with ways to protect it... https://www.dieseltruckresource.com/...d.php?t=110890

Check out my gallery and look at the Kilby's condensor guard, great add on but could be easily homemade.

sounds like the dealer is being an ***. $1200 seems high. i don't think the condensor is that expensive. and if the dealer is going to play this game, try split the difference. you cover the condensor [or part of it] and let them cover the labour and gas for the system. very poor design by dodge having the condensor so exposed.

Is the condenser actually leaking, or just damaged?

Dealer might be trying to upsell ya...

Condenser damage is common, usually you can comb it out.

Either way, get a condenser guard - check out my stainless steel guard protecting my RELOCATED condenser!

Yup I saw it coming the day I brought the truck home. I can't believe Dodge designed it this way.

I have a Kilby's now but the mesh isn't that small and depending on the size of the stone it might not do much. It will keep your toes from bending the fins when you are standing on the bumper working under the hood though.

Get details from the dealer on how it was damaged. Then (kindly and professionally) explain that DC's design left it vulnerable to damage. If they are going to leave it vulnerable by design, they are going to be held responsible for it.

OTOH, if it was damaged by negligence, accident, or malicious behavior (not by your part), then you and/or your insurance would be on the hook for it.

HTH

Here's my solution after a bird went through the bumper slot and put a dent in my condenser.

After spotting a rock smash that looked like it came close to causing a leak, I put a Kilby's Guard on mine, too. Photo in gallery with link in description.

If you go that route, mine would cause a buzz at idle as I think it got a bit warped in shipping. I took it off and bent it so that the top and bottom edge stay pressed up against the condensor, and that solved the buzz.

Geno's garage www.genosgarage.com has the Kilby's. Also, there's an 03 CTD being parted out on Ebay right now, including among many other parts, the condensor. May want to take a look at it.
