Crappy Steering wheel leather
out of the four ctd's (3 mine one mom and dads) we own all of them have area's on the steering wheel where the leathers coming apart
My 05 has 43000 on it
my mom and dads 06 has 51000
my 07 5.9 has 46000
and my 07 6.7 has just almost 90000
my 05 and 07 6.7 were bought brand new and driven only by me and my parents 06 and the other 07 of mine were bought used and already had leather coming apart.
my question is how common is this, im guessing they all do it and if so why dont they fix the problem, i have had 4 toyota pickups with over 100000 on them and the steering wheels looked like new.

My truck has 70k and at the very top it is starting to wear a tiny bit to were it feels different, but not anywere close to coming apart. Had one truck with 190k miles that the steering wheel had that, but with the miles it was to be expected. Do you always drive with your hand in the same spot or something? I don't see any reason for it to wear much....
My was shot in a little over a year...the dealer wouldn`t cover it under warranty , they said it was a "wearable item"
...yea , maybe in 5+ years or a ton of miles/use.
I bought a new one myself (around $125 at the time), and it`s lasted about 3 yrs. now , and is just starting to wear...

I put one of those leather "stitch yourself" covers on my 04.5 and SWORE I would NEVER do that again. Took over 3hrs. Then I bought my 98 and, well you guessed, put another one on. I hated every second of it, but I love the feel of a new leather wrapped wheel!
Bought it at PepBoys for around 12bucks.

I bought my '06 new and the steering wheel was replaced under warranty at 35000 and had the same problem at 80000. Now at 90000 I need to replace or cover, if I can find a leather cover that looks right.
My experience says it's oil, grease, etc that tears up (actually breaks down) the leather.
How many times have we all hopped in the cab and started up our trucks just after working on them.... with less than clean hands!

Yeah i know mine is getting real shiny on the top, but looks brand new on the bottom. I have 90,000 miles on my truck now and every month or so you need to clean leather and put a good conditioner on the wheel. Also don't forget about sweat, cologne, perfume that breaks down the leather rather fast.
