From the dyno testing done here, even removing the air box completely adds no power to the truck. So either the other truck has a different tune, a different torque converter or valve body, or the difference is all in your ears 'hearing' the power.

Thanks Spooler, no plans here to change to K&N or any other induction set up. I'm not a fan of them either, and keeping my motor/turbo clean is more important to me. If i ever graduate from a 3500# trailer to the big leagues maybe i'll do it out of necessity. For now, i'm good.

Old thread, but if you're still checking stuff, make sure your friend's truck doesn't just sound stronger. Why don't the two of you get on a back road and race from a stop. Sometimes the nice low rumble of a vehicle, or the whine of the turbo (from the CAI kit) makes it sound tougher than it really is. In my opinion, that's how the CAI kits get their claim of adding HP, sort of like getting extra HP from washing the engine or using Armorall on your interior. I get two extra horsepower every time I clean my truck!

Thanks Tony, I hear what your saying. Maybe I'll use my CTS and time myself on a 0-60 run and see what I get. This guy lives a few hours from me so dragging him isn't the most available option. Any idea what kind of time to expect?

You say both trucks have stock size tires but... tread pattern, air pressure, amount of remaining tread, etc. can make a difference.

Sorry. I'm not a drag racer in my truck. The ol' NV5600 with 234,000 miles is not a candidate for speed shifts. I was just saying that we all love to push the loud pedal a little harder occasionally when we add an accessory that makes the truck sound better. A truck with a little rumble and whine always sounds stronger than one that is quiet and meek, but that's not necessarily the fact. Sort of an optical (audio?) delusion.

If this is really bothering you, just add a BD or Smarty and have a ball.
