do a search on wet stacking and see what you come up with u will get a different opinion form everyone you talk to. but if you have to let it idle it is best to have it idle up.

I think the textbook answer would be to start her up, let oil pressure come up, then drive away easy until temps rise; then keep driving her to keep those temps up.

With the 24V engines the concern is wet stacking and gumming up the valves in a cold engine to the point where they stick and get bent at restart.

But to answer your specific question, yes its normal for the engine to come up to 1000 rpm like yours did - even when its "warmed up". When its colder, it'll come up to 1000 rpm immediately upon startup. Diesels have a tendency to idle cool. DC programmed the fast idle that way to help keep them warm(er).

Me? Sometimes I read the book, sometimes not - 'specially in the winter.

But like was already said, you'll find that idling habits/opinions are like belly buttons ............. we all have them and they're all different.

I wouldn't worry about it.

Mine doesn't always come on at fast idle when it's very cold out. Sometimes yes, but sometimes you wait the two minutes.( I'm talking about 15 below Farenheit or colder.) The truck seems to "decide " whether it starts at fast idle or not. I've had it come on at fast idle at just below freezing. As long as it's below freezing it will go to the fast idle either immediately, or after 2 minutes.
