Cold strt problem
Cold strt problem
Sup everyone. I'm new to the forum, I got an 03 1ton w 315k on it, my question. In the am when I go to start the dude. I have to crank an crank and crank before it finally fires up? Think it's my injectors or my glo plugs? Neither have ever been changed. But after the first start it strts easily through out the day. Thanks in advance for any help givin..

my '03 doesn't have "glowplugs", I think the Fords have them. Our dodge rams have "grid heaters" and mine is under the intake horn. You can check the operation by putting a voltmeter on the lugs sticking out of the spacer block that houses the grids. Have someone turnon the key to start the truck in the preheat position and wait, you check the lugs for power. There's all kinds of reasons you might be having the issue but if it's related to heaters, then thats the place to start looking. I have 247,000 on mine currently and have had zero issues even starting in -20 below last winter.

Hard starts can really be tracked down to two things.....fuel flow (plugged filter or bad lift pump) or injectors going south. These trucks will start just fine in 0* weather without the grid heater....it's an EPA mandated item to help with the smoke issue in colder weather.
Ok. Thanks guys. Imma change my injectors then. Fuel pump/pick up/ and filter are only bout a year old.
I been seeing alot of 100hp increase injectors. Is this true? Or horse doodoo? Haha

You can get just about any horsepower increase injector you want. Question then becomes do you have the fuel supply and air to make them justifiable? If you have a factory lift pump and turbo then pretty much anything more than a 60hp injector won't do you any good.....they would drain the rail and the fuel system couldn't keep up.
Kk. I preciate that j, but does it really add that much power? I'm ignorant to how these trucks are because I build imports. And I just ben hauling them around w my truck. But now I'm wanting

If you have sufficient airflow (bigger turbo) and sufficient fuel supply (Fass or AirDog) then theoretically yes, 100hp injectors would net you that much power through a Smarty or BullyDog etc. programmer. As for fire, diesels are compression ignition engines. When the piston is coming up on compression stroke it super heats the air in the cylinder and as it reaches TDC the injector shoots the fuel in and the mixture ignites driving the piston down again. With a gas engine you have a single short burst of fuel with the spark hitting it and combustion begins/ends rather quickly. With a diesel the combustion cycle lasts much longer as the spray and the hot air mixing together the explosion in the cylinder is much more drawn out thus giving the diesel engine quite a hp/torque advantage over it's gas counterpart.

If you go to the expense of injectors, add some extra fuel filtration after the OEM fuel filter setup.
^ ok preciate that! U guys think it could be the filter? Sometimes the truck will just die!! And then come right back on! Kinda weird and check engine will come on after it dies. Really need to get this boy fixed cause I'm going to Philly in it this weekend. And I live in oklahoma! Thanks guys
