cold start up

Here's what happened, truck sat all day outside, temp was 18 deg. wait to start light came on as usual, I waited to start then started it and it fired right up and immediately went to 1000 rpm as it fired and stayed there. I shut it down appx. 30 seconds after I started then waited appx 30 seconds and restarted it to see if it would duplicate, it did not, it started up as it normally does, stayed at base idle then after a minute or so it went to 1000rpm. The truck has never done that before, but on a cold start if I don't engage the high idle myself it does go to high idle on its own.
Anyone ever have this happen and is it normal?

TIA

Not me, It will start normal then the usual 1-2 minute later it hits 1000 RPM. I hope it was just a fluke, but it doesnt sound bad anyway.

Yes and yes. It depends on the ambient temperature, I think. Thursday morning here, it was 19*, and as soon as she fired, it went right to 1000 rpm. Last couple of mornings, it wasn't as cold, and it took at least 30 seconds before she idled up.

that is normal it will also do that if you let idle after it is warmed up if the temps outside are very cold

Mine has done that a few times that it has been below 20* and it has not been plugged in. It set a code relating to the grid heater one time but the dealer could find nothing wrong.

It's normal. Mine does it both of the ways described. It has to be really cold to fire and go to 1K immediately.

Mine wont do it on start up, but after about 10 seconds or so it goes to 1200 ish. and stays there till I go some where. Sure sounds funny outside of it. And It doesnt even get that cold here. I think the low was 28 at the most.

Mine did it this morning, it was 25 degrees outside. It seems like it only does it when it's in the 20's or less.

This I don't understand. Motor temp was about 170 degrees or so and I was waiting for the egt's to come down and it went to high idle. I also noticed it takes longer for the egt's to drop when it's cold out. Go figure?
