Cold air intake????

I am thinking about putting a cold air intake, I was thinking K & N. Is this a good one, middle of the road, etc? Will this help with power and mileage?

When I bought this truck I said its going to be bone stock. Well Last night I removed the baffles and the silencer ring. I m working my way up. Wow I love the sound of that turbo. Thanks DTR!

Personally, I have a bad feeling about K&N on the CTD... When I bought my truck, the service manager told me not to use them because they let small stuff get through. A lot of guys here like the AFE 2. I've seen them, they look good, and the performance is good, also. I'm cheap, I did a DIY cold air intake...

I agree with madhat, I've heard the same thing, so I would steer clear of K&N. I have AFE and am happy with it.

I agree with them stay away from K&N. I've had AFE Pro guard 7 stage 1 (liked it)and now have AEM Workhorse (love it). Go with AFE PG7, AEM or Amsoil nano, That seems to be what most everyone is running.

Which AFE kit would be best for a bone stock truck taken directly off the lot? Planned mods at this point are intake and exhaust.

AFE Stage II would be recommended. It's hard to beat the *****'s Whistler though!

I have been using K & N since 82 on my Suburban 6.2L which had no power so I bought a Banks sidewinder turbo, and it came with the K & N filter. Every one has heard of a guy that knew a guy, BS. The problem isn't in the filter it's the operator that services it that doesn't know what they are doing, over oiling the filters is what causes problems. Properly serviced they work great in a CTD.

K&N is a no no in most peoples book. I dropped a 4'' cold air scoop from the bottom of the air box. [home made] Then replaced the filter with the new Amsoil eaa 189.

Cold air or more air? I just mounted a fan in the top of my air box. My intake temps went down some and my low end power went up as well as quicker turbo spool up. Also the boost doesn't drop off as much between shifts. Pictures in my member photos.

A lot of people have bad things to say about K & N but as you can see from this thread it's all second hand knowledge. Go take a look at the particle size these filter down to if you want some real answers. Like marty649 said, the problems with K & N usually result from someone over oiling the filter. I ran K & N on my truck for about 15K before switching to AFE because of the new turbo setup. No problems with my K & N, and it really made the stock turbo whistle loud if that's one of the things you're after.

I used a K&N for a while. My biggest problem was cleaning it, should have had a prefilter. I went to a Amsoil foam oil type filter and liked it much better. That was a long time ago on my 97.

Well i have first hand knowledge on the K&N thing. I've run them for years on supercharged mustangs, pickups, motorcycles etc. The only problem I ever had with a K&N filter was on my 2001 PSD. I bought the complete CAI kit and after about 30K miles the turbo went out. Later I found out from the dealer and a few other mechanics I know that it's not a good idea to run a K&N on a diesel. For gas there great, but I dont' reccomend them for diesel. My dealer actually reccomends the AFE setup...
