Cleaning AFE Progard 7 interval?

How often are you guys cleaning your AFE. I have about 2500 miles on mine and it is starting to look pretty black. What is the consensus on how far these things will go with mostly highway driving?

I'm wondering if I can use my K&N recharge kit with the AFE filter. I hate to spend money on one from AFE if the K&N is the same. Anybody know??
