Chirping Snow Tires with ABS

I noticed that both the truck as well as a 93 Taurus can chirp snow tires when braking hard. Last night in the sedan I had to hit the brakes quickly as three racoons ran across the road in front of me. I have studded Cooper M+S tires on the truck and Michelin Alpins on the car. I guess the ABS is set up for some sort of slippage vs response time, as both vehicles slowed down quickly and then chirped, in the rain no less.

As I mentioned previously if you're experiencing long stopping distances you need better tires for the conditions.
