If its a 3rd generation truck, try turning ignition on with out starting three time, watch your trip meter for the codes. If there are none, it will simply read done.

hours vs codes

To check codes you turn the key to the on position quickly 3 times, then the codes appear. If there are none, it says "done". (do not need to actually start)

04 diesel -- Based on what you did, you should have been viewing the engine hours. To view engine hours you hold the trip button down and turn the key to on position and hold for 6 seconds. If you were viewing codes, it will scroll through the codes if you have any and then say "done".

I could very well be wrong, but I did a search and I have checked engine codes a few times, especially after forgetting to plug in the MAP and getting the check engine light.
