Checking for codes

Sorry in advance. I did a search and did not find an answer, I must be stupid. With the changing weather last spring I would get a CEL once for the battery and once for the air rational. Today with changing weather CEL came up. I tried to cycle the key and for the life of me cannot get the code to come up. I am doing something wrong. All I get is "-----". should'nt it say done? I cycled from off/on/off/on/off/on with off being the place where you could pull the key out on being where the engine lights come on. I also tried cycling from the spot where all you see is the transmission selector & odometer as the off position. I was able to do this 6 months ago and now can't.

You need to end up in "on", not started, just on.

They should display.

Just on, off, on, off, on.

Huh?

Dunno then. Take it to an Autozone (or comparable) they will read the codes for you.

Could it be that the code has been cleared and that is why I get "---------" in the odometer. I always thought it would say "done". Or is that only when a code comes up? Sorry for rehashing this, I have forgotten some of the procedures. I should be sent to my room without supper.

Thanks. I will see if the light come on during lunch. I'll take it to AutoZone and see if they can see the code. I have to go into chicago later today and want to make sure nothing is wrong.

Went to AutoZone and read it. P0071 air temp rational. Must be that time of year. Went ahead and bought the Actron AutoScanner. Only $106, now the light will never come on. Thanks for the help P.J .
