Check those alternator brackets boys!
Re:Check those alternator brackets boys!
Could be they have some engines with the old bracket still in inventory. The TSB about replacing the bracket says it's for build dates before Feb 13 and engine serial numbers prior to 67013271.

Good for you for having a dealer that would give you the parts. My dealer, and the one up the street, insisted that they had to put it on themselves.
Re:Check those alternator brackets boys!
New bracket finnally installed as none of my local dealers were yet aware of the T.S.B. and then it took about 2 weeks for the parts to arrive. But no more worries.
Re:Check those alternator brackets boys!
i didnt like the attitude the dealer I bought my truck from was giving me....so I took it too Carson Dodge....they took it off an did an NDI (Non-Destructive Inspection with lights and magnifying glass) too check for fractures...there was none so I guess im in the clear....I guess [undecided] Neither one of the dealers would order and pay for the part unless it was cracked
my truck falls in the grey area, my engine serial number is like 25 increments before the cutoff, the enine build date is the 13 of Feb...but my truck build date is the 24 of Feb
I have kept all documents and comments...lets hope i dont have too use them

The bracket that cracks is stamped sheet metal. The replacement is cast. If yours is cast, I don't think you will have a problem. PM me if you want a picture of either or both.

Casey

They say i have the "updated bracket"

Which I know better...it looks the same as the ones that have failed :-[
The problem im having is the build date of the truck is two weeks AFTER the build date of the engine [undecided]

I looked at 5 new trucks this week at the dealer with a friend who was thinking of buying, not a single one with the new bracket, although the build dates were after what was listed on the TSB. Is cummins still putting on the old bracket?

I got mine from the dealer and installed it myself, they supplied it no charge, took about 10 minutes.

CTDCAL
[/quote]I wish I could get even this lucky...they wont even supply mine :'(
Re:Check those alternator brackets boys!
dangit, I checked and found I got the steel stamped version. I guess a trip AGAIN to the dealer is in order. May I'll get em to check all the fluids while there at it.
Re:Check those alternator brackets boys!
If your bracket isn't cracked, don't expect to have it replaced. There is no recall on the old bracket, only a Technical Service Bulletin on how to replace a cracked bracket. ???

Oh great Sierra phil does that mean I gotta go out there with my hack saw and crowbar and take care of business ??? Or should I just wait and let the altinator hit the radiator ??? Seriously thanks for the heads up as I already get enough funny looks from the dealership

Re:Check those alternator brackets boys!
Have to say it again to you guys who are not seeing the cracks (not saying that all of them are cracked), I really had to strain to see the crack.

Mine was replaced a couple weeks ago. I was in to the dealer today and the bracket was sitting on the desk of the service manager. He asked me to show them where the crack was - - they couldn't find it. Well, I couldn't show it to them either sitting on the desk. We took it in the back, put it in a vice, took vice grips and put a strain on it and the crack opened up so you could see it. They were starting to doubt me when I told them it was cracked. They changed it with no questions, but then looked for the crack and couldn't find it. I had to put pressure on my alternator before I saw it when it was mounted.

Well....after ignoring this thread for I don't know how long...I finally figured out that I have the old bracket. The good news is that I've looked and looked and looked and I don't see any sign of cracks. The bad news is that it's still the old one. For the time being I'll just keep an eye on it as I don't feel like arguing with the dealer. So far my service department hasn't given me any reason to think they're halfway competent. Maybe when I take it in for it's first oil change I'll mention it to them and just see what they say.

I think I'm also probably due for that cruise control recall...even though I've never received anything on it.

Yup mine has them too!
