cheapest tranny fix?
cheapest tranny fix?
Well i picked up a new trailer the other day and pulling it around my truck doesnt want to to shift. I have to actually let off the fuel pedal toshift it will just scream all the way to redline unless i let out of it. the trailer is about 7k lbs and when im locked in it pulls great above 40 mph but below that its down right embarrassing. any help is appreciated
sounds like your clutch packs are going out. my truck did the same thing but in reverse... it was my first second and third gear. i did a valve body to keep things as tight as possible and the trans held for another year in a half. the cheapest way to go is higher pressure valve body stock rebuild kit and since your towing a 3 disc converter. that should be around 2500 bucks give or take. i had mine rebuilt with all new racing clutches and a billet input shaft and laminated flex plate and georend converter. i used my existing bd race valve body and bd pressure lok and it is awesome i got everything for around 4500 bucks and feels just like a fully built 7000 dollar trany. hts makes a good affordable trans and they have a lot of options too.

cheap is pulling it yourself, buying a seal and clutch kit for $200 +/- and $75. worth of trans fluid, 20$ worth of mineral spirits (for cleaning) and spending the better part of a weekend rebuilding those clutch packs. I just did mine, 2 hrs taking it out, 6 hrs rebuilding the roasted clutches and steels and 3 hrs going back in. I didnt need to change EVERYTHING in there, only the stuff that was smoked. The bushing were fine, and the gears, etc. were fine, just needed sprayed off to remove all the black gunk. New filter, good to go.
My front drum clutches were toast, they control 3-gear. The next drum had no wear or heat indicated on them at all. I could pull first and second no problem but the shift into 3rd resulted in rpm and no increase in speed. I used the Alto red thin clutches and Kolene steels (Thinner) and was able to put 7 clutches and 7 steels in that drum that had 5/5 in it before I started rebuilding it. Reverse is the same clutch pack with a band applied. PM me if you want a CD of the shop manual for my truck, it has a pretty good trans section in it. That's about as cheap as it gets bud.

ive heard that as well... bigger isnt always better but more is. and the only reason i had mine built by a profesional is because im horrible with auto trannys! if your not confident doing it yourself then dont do it. but yes it will save you tons of money.
