I just bought a Mag-Hytech transmission pan for my truck. I wanted to install it and change the ATF fluid to synthetic. I was wondering because just changing the pan and fluid would leave the remaining ATF fluid within the transmission, if there was anything I would need to do. Any information will help.

 

just changing the pan and filter only changes about 4-6 qts of the fluid. Not sure on total capacity, but to full change to synthetic you would have to flush system. Not sure how transmission would run on syntheic though.

 

The ATF +4 transmission fluid that is in your truck now is SYNTHETIC. I'd just buy some more ATF fluid from your local dealer or buy a ATF +4 compatible fluid (I think you can buy some from Walmart now) and go with it. Make sure you change your transmission filter. I think they included one with your MH Pan. Then fill er up and you are good to go. The MH pan will hold 4 quarts over stock.

ATF+4 is full synthetic and is what Chrysler recommends right now. The mag-hytec has a filter spacer but no filter. You can get +4 at NAPA, Valvoline makes it, the part number is VV346.

 

lawdog79, I am getting ready to do this same thing tomorrow to my truck. My Mag-Hytec is the one that holds another 2 qts. over stock and I bought 10 qts. of Mopar ATF+4 from Wal Mart ($4.42 a qt.) and ordered a new filter (the MH does not come with a new filter) and gasket from Genos.

 

The extra capacity depends on which mag hytec you buy, I use about 20 quarts when I do a complete rebuild and add the "double deep" pan. They do include a pan gasket.

 

Is the pan gasket they include a good one or should I reuse the stock one?

 

I reused the factory gasket. The gasket that came with my pan was a much thinner wax paper looking thing. Factory gasket much better looking. Almost 10,000 miles since install,and no problems. Also I needed 10 quarts of ATF+4 to refill after putting on a Mag dd. and that didnt put it at the high end of the safe range.

 

Thanks I will reuse the factory gasket. I did get 10 qts. but I got the regular deep pan not the DD.

 

Be careful with that factory O ring gasket. Too much on the bolts and it will crack I been told. Post how it worked, I've been think'n of doing the DD on mine.

 

Well I also have the filter/gasket kit below from Geno's so maybe I should use the gasket that came with it.

I could have sworn 2 years ago when I got my DD pan that they included a tranny filter in the box with the spacer and pan. I guess MH stopped doing that.

 

I got my Mag Hytec installed this afternoon. Worse part was the mess the original pan made trying to get it off. I let the tranny drain for a couple of hours while I changed the filter. The new pan went on really easy and it took 8 qts. to fill it back up to the top of the full mark. I had to go pickup one of the dogs at the vet this afternoon and that was a 40 mile round trip, I notice the trans temp was about 15* cooler than the trip there and back this morning. I am very happy with the results.
