Changing Transmission Fluid/Filter

I am approaching 30,000 miles on my Ram and would like to think about a fluid and filter change. What type of fluid is recommended and is there anything I need to look for once the pan is removed? Thanks.

ATF+4 is the fluid to use.

Just clean out than bottom of the pan, there shouldn't be much, other than some grayish metal pasty stuff (which is normal wear) and a magnet with more of that grey paste

What he said. My truck has a re-useable filter, so check before you buy one. Clean the pan good, I use a parts washer, (safeTclean), but I'm sure that break parts cleaner would work as well. Just wipe it out real good. Clean the magnent off. It's easier to do my truck than my wife's 1500.

I think you mean....re-usable gasket. It's a good gasket (thin steel with a ribbon of rubber) just don't go he-man with the pan bolts. Get the filter from your freindly DC dealer, it's only $20. Manual calls for 4qt replacement fluid after a filter change, mine for some reason took 6.5.

Oil dry, lots of rags, and hand cleaner.

If I remember right, it's 35 inch pounds on the two filter bolts and 125 inch pounds on the pan bolts. Thats inch pounds, not foot pounds.
