Last time I changed my fuel filter I put the drain hose in a clean 20oz coke bottle and set the bottle on the axle. Reasons for that are, catch the fuel, and the second is I put the cap on and set it on the shelf for a while to see if anything, i.e. water, separated out after a while. It didn't. I hadn't drained the filter in a while and wanted to see if I saw any water. Either way, the coke bottle fits nicely up there. Have fun!

Yeah it was so easy usually nothing goes smooth when working on vehicles but went as smooth as butter. While I had the truck in the garage I painted my cab lights man that turned out great I had bought a set of black ones but one blew and leds we soldered in and they leaked.

Whoa.....
Two questions... Where do you find Valvoline Synthetic at $8 a gallon, and just how big is your filter if it holds 3 quarts???

You said you only put two more gallons in the fill hole because you had the 3 quarts in the filter...

For any newbies doing their first change, If you let the truck drain good ( 10 minutes) and change the filter, you can safely assume you will need 3 gallons of oil. I ALWAYS put in almost a quart in the filter, then dump the rest in the oil cap, wait 5 minutes and check the oil BEFORE I start the engine.

The oil will be a bit high as the filter still needs a few ounces, but at least I know I have oil.

Too many horror stories of people who forgot a gallon, accidently added an extra gallon, left the oil plug out, etc..... These are $8,000 engines. I'm careful with mine....

VPB is not full synthetic, its semi synthetic. Synthetic additives to a group II dino oil. PB Extreme is full synthetic and a lot more that regular PB. AA does show it for 12.99/gal reg price. They don't show extreme anywhere I could find.

Are you sure you are using premium blue synthetic? I know they sell gallons of standard premium blue for that price on sale, but never seen synthetic. That is a smokin deal!

You can get just about a full qt. in the filter if your patient. The drain plug however is a pos and I now have a nice leaker. Just bought that fix from Geno's Garage.

I shoved 3 gallons total V Premium Blue in there. Baldwin filter. Scary using a filter even close to the color of Fram.

Just did the my oil today for the first time. I was hoping to avoid putting an oil slick on the driveway and succeeded by going slow. I drained the oil into a big 3 gal car wash bucket. While that emptied I removed the filter. That took using all my extensions...10 + 6 + 3 haha It was on there tight but it came off without too much fuss.

I filled the new filter (FleetGuard) only about 2/3 to 3/4 way up so I could be sure it wouldn't spill as I tried to get it screwed back on. Then I installed a new Fumoto drain valve. When I did so the pan was still trickling oil. Once I got the valve screwed in I opened it and oil continued to trickle out. This was good to see as I know there were some questions on whether or not the Fumoto valve was shallow enough to allow all the oil to drain. Well, I would venture to say yes it does if it allowed the trickle level oil to drain.

I refilled with 11.5 qts total and went for a drive to dump the used oil and grab some groceries. I'll let the truck sit for a while now and recheck the level.

For the fuel filter (Baldwin) I did that a couple weeks ago. I used a large isopropyl alcohol bottle and propped it up on the front diff with the drain hose dangling inside. I used the instructions in the tech section and it was pretty simple. I still have the bottle of used diesel (what do you do with it?). I still haven't seen any water separation. I guess that's a good thing right?

Ditto on the Fleetguard filters.
Ditto on ensuring the gasket comes off with the old filter.

As for the oil filter swap...I like to slip a gallon-size freezer bag under the filter once I have it cracked loose, then continue to loosen/remove. This way, if it spills it's contained. And once it's off, I can just "zip" it shut to prevent spillage later on. Just a personal preference.

Best tip is don't EVER take it to Big O tires for an oil change. Took my truck there this weekend. 2nd time ever in my life I've let someone else change the oil on my personal vehicles, but with my wife in and out of the hospital the last month, it wasn't happening.
Both the drain plug and filter are leaking a bit. There's some yellow **** around the drain plug and the Big O is 130mi away from here so I can't take it back and shove it down their incompetent throats!
Oh and had to trade my buddy for his POS Titan for the week so the friend helping my wife out can get her to the doctor, kids to school, etc......can't drive a stick. So I can't get under the truck and fix it. I really hope they didn't put any sealant on the drain plug!
There I feel better now!

The biggest problem I have with oil changes is oil splashing. The plug drains so hard and fast it splashes when it hits the drain pan and leaves splatters on the shop floor.

That's not a real bad problem to have I guess!

And I just put on a Mopar filter. Need to get some Fleetguards again!

haha yeah. I've read some pretty messy stories and once that black diesel oil is on something, it is never coming out.

I laid out a giant piece of cardboard under the truck. It's my creeper anyway
