Changed High P pump same problem
Changed High P pump same problem
Took truck in for problem with miss. Dealer replaced #5. Drove truck 2.5 miles truck stalled. Restarted after 20secounds. ran 30sec stalled - repeat 5 times - towed to dealer. Dealer diagnosed high p. pump. Asked for 3k!! Had truck towed home. Bought pump for 760 from city disel in decatur AL. P tested low preasure at 11.5 static. Installed high p pump. Drove truck 2.5 mile - it stalled. restarted after 10 sec drove 10 sec back to garage. Installed T fitting and checked low p. while eng running. p. at about 6lbs. ran for 10min idle not stall - ran 10 min @ 2k no stall. Bought 4' of fuel line put guage under windshiel wiper. Drove .25mile truck stalled. Restarted after 10 sec. drove back to garage. Duct taped gauge in better position so I could see it. Drove 4 miles punched in secound 1lbs. 3rd punched 2lbs . 60mph = 5-6lbs no stall. drove up Mountain at 75mph fuel p at about 3lbs.
I bought the truck about 3200miles ago. has 134k on it. It is tight and seems t be good shape.
I have a foss in the garage. Tank now near empty. Still don't know why I have had the stall issue. Why did it start why did it stop?? think my injection pump was good - I think deale is a poser. Think I could diagnos with a dart board too.
Should I install the foos. Is my intank pump ok.
Did I just suck some bad gas. Truck seemed to have more power the day I bought it. Test drive took off like rocket chirped 2nd gear? seems to be a little slugish now.
Is preasure of near 0 too low during drag start? I don't think my guage is very acurate at this low p.
Truck is stock
Thanks for the help

Tell us about the truck, Model, Year.
I'm guessing it's a 12V? Fill in your signature.
dealer replaced #5 injector? Those FP numbers are very low for any truck. Install your FASS fuel system i think that's what you call a foos. But if you have the intank you will need a Draw Straw.

got the staw too
Thanks I have an 04 5.9 ho 2wd quad work truck. Yea I ment F.A.S.S.
I thouht I saw a thread saying low #s like mine were ok
any idea on the stalls?
Tryng to decide on the FASS. My tank is low so I don't whant to test drive more - googd time to dropthe tank
What presures are others getting with intank pumps.
deelear diagnostics area joke
the only thing I know they can do is electronicly isolate injectors witth the computer system
3k for a pump - is everybody rich?
thanks

Your LIFT PUMP is bad, replace and be done, and then enjoy your truck
Have you changed the fuel filter recently? If not I would do that as soon as possible. And if you already have the Fass I would get that thing slapped in there. I agree your lift pump sounds weak. Not surprising for that year truck with that many miles.
Never thought 130k wasw high for diesel. My 92 chevy gas was sold with 256k in good running condition no oil add between 3k oil changes. I intank pump replaced one watter pump, 1 altinator, 1 5 speed. I towed way too much with the 1/2 ton. Floged it for 9 years.
I believe my high p. pump was not bad.
Can dealers onlly make money by isolating there customers from the service people and charging outrageous prices.
Is it possible for a dealerr to earn more $$$$ by doing good service at lets say $65 hour and then communicating with customer.
Or is it more profitable for the dealer to work to work to locate a sucker then let him have it with huge bill.
Dealer charged 800 for 1 injector
Would have charged $3000 for HP pump
then another 1500 for lift pump
another 100 for towing
$8300
My cost on parts for this work is about $2000 dealers cost should be less
$6300 for a days work is not bad if you can get it.
I am opening a new tractor and Equip sales and service I may expand that to diesel mechanics.
I have about 12 disels - detroit GM cummins mitsubishi I personally maintain for my const co - been doing it since I was 11.
Tierd of trying to manage the crazy Ilegal Subs and their slimy brokers.

You let them do the repair work, right?
$800 for 1 injector, you got robbed
$1500 for a lift pump is highway robbery again
You are opening a tractor service, and MAY expand to diesel mechanics? What kind of tractors do you service if I may ask?
You have 12 diesels , you handle all of the maintenance for your construction company, been doing it since you were 11, but yet you could not change out a Lift Pump? Or an injector?
I am finding your post a little confusing.

Dealer is in business to make money. If they can charge it and people pay for it, why not, you did. Then you complain about it.
If you were unhappy with the price (they would have told you the cost BEFORE they fixed it) you didn't have to pay it. And since you have been working on 12 diesels since you were 11 years old, I would think you wouldn't have, you would have fixed it yoursef. I may have misread your post, and just wondering if I did.
Installed FASS pump with draw straw. Same stall problem. Yea, I have 19lbs of static pressure. Truck still stalls. Only now it sounds like someone is trying to hammer drill through my floor board. Not only was my original CP3 working great so was my in-tank lift pump.
FASS's draw straw concerns me. Had to drill 1.25" hole through my tank and install grommet and tube assembly. The grommet fits loosely. I believe it is likely that some water can enter the fuel tank during wet conditions. Especially flood conditions. Yes I occasionally need to drive through water. No I don't recommend anyone drive through water. The stock pickup system seals to the tank much better.
If I can't come up with a way to isolate my FASS to quiet it down I will return to using the in tank pump. The FASS took 9hr to install. Pull tank, clean wire, mount ect. Could do in 7 to 8 next time.
I also fear that the 19lbs static pressure from the FASS could damage my new CP3?
Sure didn't change the way my truck runs.
Having truck towed to second dealer. Spoke with mechanic on the telephone - he couldn’t think of anything.
It stalled on me after driving 5 min from cold start and died while receiving 10.5 lbs from FASS as read between rail and low p. pump.
I don't believe my persistent prob is fuel related. I am now 16hr closer to the end of my work life and $2300 poorer than last week.
My best guess as to my problem is computer related. My current condition started after my dealer changed #5 injector. He used computer to isolate injectors for diagnoses. Could he have screwed my programming? Truck has not had the power it had before the injector was replaced. Reminds me of a gasser running in default computer mode sluggish - that is before it dies (stalls).
So what next? - Seat covers?
Thanks
Philip

I do no think you are reading gauges right.....10.5 lbs of pressure between rail and low pressure pump? There is NO rail between rail and low pressure pump. Also, if you are reading 19PSI at one point from your FASS and 10.5PSI at another junction, sounds like a restriction somewhere, once again, if you are reading gauges right. Clogged fuel filter?
If your current problem started AFTER teh dealer worked on it, then why are you taking it to another dealer??? Why did you take it in for teh #5 injector?
Your post is still very confusing, is that why you started another thread on this topic?
my fuel p. guage is placed between the filter and the high preasure pump. I have plenty of fuel and preasure there. about 10.5. during exceleration. My intank pump read much lower (about ). The point is there is no change. The FASS helped my problem 0.
I had the truck towed to another dealer because I have not beenable to diagnose the problem. I have elimnated every mechanical problem I can think of.
I guess I have an electrical problem. Spoke with City Diesel in Decatur AL they do alot of performance work and diagnostics. But, they don't have the extreamly exspensive diagnostic hard and software the dealerrs have. Only the dealers have the capability to upgrade the cummins software (atleast in my area) . The last dealer I went to diagnosed CP3 failure, but that diagnosis is suspect because the truck acts now as it did before the the CP3 was replaced.
I guess I could have a restriction, I did not do a vloume test. Anyone know the fuel volum range needed by my CP3? But I think it is not likly that I am restricted because the preasure remains so high even under exceleration.
I'm not so sure cp3 can handle high input preasure. Why are you so sure it can handle the preasure?
I took it to dealer originally because of a miss. Dealer diagnosed #5. Dealer can use computer to isolate indvidual injectors I can't . Been asking this forum for best procedures to check injector. Laser temp test did not work for me temps were within 6% of each other.
I would like to eliminate dealer because I believe they mis diagnosed my CP3. And on other vehicles dealers have made diagnosis and repair errors and I have never had the admit there mistake. We will see how this deealer does.
I let you know

Do you have any ideas
I posted the new thread so my current take on my problem can be "ontop"

OK, what was/is confusing me is you said 19PSI once and then 10PSI. Where are you getting teh 2 readings from? You are also acting like you have TWO lift pumps. You have ONE lift pump, and depending on what year your truck is, is either in the tank or mounted onback of your fuel filter housing.
You say "so high, even under acceleration" Where? How much? Do you know that the CP3 produces 20,000+ PSI? yes, 20 THOUSAND+ lbs of pressure. Are you reading that pressure somewhere?
Why am I so sure? Because for one, I run at 17-20 PSI from my LIFT PUMP (low pressure ppump) that feeds my INJECTION PUMP (high pressure pump also known as teh CP3) So, my CP3 receives 17-20 PSI fom my LIFT PUMP, ad the fact that about 10,000 members on this site are running the same pump that I am producing the same pressure. Your stock lift pump produced @ 10PSI to the CP3. So, yes, I am sure that the CP3 can handle it.
You do NOT need to post/start another thread, just keep it going in THIS one, and you can keep THIS one on top by doing that. You have 2 different threads going on teh same topic, no need for that. Stay in this one.
So, answer the few questions that I have asked, and we can start eliminaing some things.
