The change to Ultra Low Sulfur Fuel

I've been hearing a lot of talk about this ultra low sulfur fuel. In fact, I just had the exhaust changed on my truck and casually asked the guy about this and he said any diesel truck older than 2007 must have additive in their fuel otherwise their injectors will be trashed.

To verify, I called the Dodge dealer this morning. He explained that all 2007 and newer vehicles need ultra low sulfur fuel. I said, "well do I need additive?" He said that the official word from Chrysler right now is no...BUT, IF IT WERE ME I WOULD ADD IT.

I'm ****** because if I need additive for every tank - the cost of fuel for me just went up significantly... Now the thought of trading the 2006 in for a 2007. What a pain in the butt. Just when I got the truck really looking good!

You're talking about 2-4 bucks a tank hardly worth trading in your truck up to an 07 IMO

My truck has run ULSD exclusively since day one, about 13,350 miles now. I'll throw a bottle of Power Service (grey) in the tank once every 2,000 miles or so. So far I have not had a single issue. I would worry more about keeping the fuel filtered well than what kind of fuel you use.

I run 8oz marvel mystery oil and 12 oz power service in each tankful. I get better mileage that pays for the additives. Howes is a additive that lots of people run,it claims better mileage or double your money back on the bottle.Some people use marine 2 cycle oil or non detergent 30w. There are lots of additives on the market .Its your choice,but with all the injector issues Im adding lube to mine and changing my fuel filter every oil change.Yes I know thats overkill but whats $12 on a $42000 truck?

My other big issue with this is that the owners manuel specifically states that no additive should be put in the fuel... Now I know we can do what we want. But, how can they say not to use an additive and then when JOE SCHMO decides to change the fuel -- now we need additive. It's one of those things where were damned if we do or damned if we don't...

No big deal. You kinda got it backwards. The 07.5s with the new 6.7 motor must burn ULSF, we can burn anything with the 5.9. They must burn ULSF because of the filter in the exhaust system.( Part of the new EPA crap).
Removeing the sulfer also removes some lube from the fuel, so the refinerys are supposed to add lube back in to meet the specks needed. Question is if they do or not.The new 6.7 will need the lube same as the 5.9 does , NO DIFFERANCE!! Get a gal. of power service additive anywhere and add 6-8 oz to every 1/2 tank. Actually you been burning this new fuel for several months now . Tradeing for the new 6.7 will not change your concerns at all.

They are. My wife's uncle is a plant manger in Big Spring, Tx. They have been making the ULSF since mid summer. He told me that they had to meet lube specs for the older diesel motor.

Run a 7 Mircron Fuel Filter - DC now DEMANDS a 7 micron, A LOT of trucks came with the 10 micron.

Run PS & MM. Cheap insurance....

my 96 has been running fine.
ive never ran any additve, until today i hooked up with two bottles of seafoam
and this is my first diesel, never ran anything but the ULSD.

Your exhaust guy is full of it.

ULSD meets the same lubricity standards that the previous fuel met. You don't need to add an additive.

I got my 06 two week ago and I am running Power Service grey bottle, 8 oz every 25 gallons. Buy it by the gallon (actually 96 oz bottle, just shy of a gallon) @ walmart 12-15 bucks per gallon depending on what state. Cheap insurance on $45k. IMHO

I have a small 32 oz bottle I fill up from the larger bottle and keep it under the back seat.

It may be the concerns about low sulfer fuel have been exaggerated. Many people use additives and a variety of reasons, yet there is no strong evidence that additives do anything but lighten your wallet--any of the additives. In fact, Cummins does not recommend any additive. Just fill your tank and don't worry about it. There is the same lubrication in low sulfer fuel as in the regular stuff.

Well said, I haven't seen a single example of ULSD or not runing an addtitive causing a problem.

Do what you feel is best.
