Can you change the weight rating on vehicles
Can you change the weight rating on vehicles
I ask this since I have an 05 2500. So it has the 3500 rear axle on it. On the door it states the front axle is 5500 and the rear is 6000. In my book that is 11.5k. Ihave air bags on it already. Where would you go to do this if possible. Has it been done before. Also does anybody know if I could haul a 16k dump trailor with this truck.
05 ctd qc auto 4.10 will have an exhaust brake and a bunch of other goodies. thanks for any insight.

in chicago we had a company that was big into lifting trucks, and what he would do is legally change the g.v.w. on the trucks so the bumper height law would not effect them. godmuuders was the company you can check into that maybe.
Alot of equiptment companys which install bodys and plows have the GVW update stickers also. Just remember once your over 9999 most states require you to go commercial registration, I'd rather keep my OEM numbers and passenger tags to keep off the scales.
It can be done and has been by several current members on this site. The procedures vary by state, you would have to check with your local Secretary of States Office to find out about yours. I have never heard of it being an easy procedure. You need to move this thread to the General Diesel section to get more visibilty on it. Most of the guys that have done this are in the 1st and 2nd generation trucks.
Commercial
In CA -ALL- pickup trucks are required to have Commercial Plates.
A real rip-off, but no way around it. A one ton costs more than a
3/4 ton, which costs more than a 1/2 ton, etc.
First year of Kali license for my (new in '05) 3500 SRW was $502.
How about - do your suspension mods (as/if needed)
to handle whatever load you want to haul or tow - and go for it.
How about make a good "first impression" on the "weight police" -
Put some 3500 badges on it! Change the "2" to a "3"
[and - Clearence lights on the roof - if you like 'em]
If they don't ask [or look further], don't tell.

Unless it changed from when I was in CA a few years ago he is right. The way around the law was to install a campershell and go to the DMV to show them that it was truely installed. The theory behind the law was that most pickups were used for work under the table which kept the state from getting all their tax money.

In Texas you can register it up to the rating of your tires, I put my2500 at 10,000.
Iceman, what rating tires did you put on your truck to get a 10000# rating. Most load range E are around 3,190. Multiply that times two(rear axle only) it would be about 6400#. If you are talking about all 4 tires that would be 12,800#.
Stock tires, I weighed the truck and figured the max weight on the rears and the front weighs around 3900 empty so i figured 10000 was all I could ever weigh without overloading rear. My plain jane truck came with 245\70\17 that have a max of 3000.
I think you all are a little off here on your assesment. You are talking about getting a higher weight rated license plate. If you are ever stopped for weight and really checked they don't care what plates your running, they look at the metal data plate on the inside of the drivers door, that's what really counts. To get that changed takes a whole inspection procedure and alot of paperwork in the best of states.
Guys, When I bought my truck it was registered for 4999kg or 9999pounds. When I moved it to my home province I registered it for 12000 pounds or 5454kg. On my door jam it says front axle 5200 pounds 2351kg and rear axle 9350lbs 4242kg. GVWR on door tag is 12000 pounds or 5444kg. Total axle pound= 14,550 6,593kg. Total stock tire capacity 18 510 pounds, Current tire capacity 19,830 pounds. Axle capacity does not include the weight of the axle, wheel or tire. My home province would have let me register it for up to 6593kg. My insurance company advised me to register it for 5454kg maximum otherwise I would need commercial truck insurance instead of a commercial company policy. To register my truck for the extra 2000 pounds I needed a Class 3 4 heavy truck with trailer licence non air brake endorsed. This required a driving test with my 48' trailer in tow. It was worth it to me because I was always at least 2000 pounds heavy on the truck at the scale and they had run out of warnings for being over 14.2k pounds without a CDL. I had to take my new registration to the scale and now I just have to wave on the scale. My trailer is registered in another province to another company. If they were registered to the same company in the same province they would have to be combined which would limit my gross combined weight to 22,000 pounds. Because they are not they take the two registrations add them together and if I'm under that then all is ok. That limit is over 38k pounds and I have never exceeded that limit. The GCWR is not on the DOT door tag on my truck but the stock tire size is LT235x80xr17E at 65psi. I have been stopped out of province and they check the registrations, the tires, and the pressures. I have been over truck registered weight many times but always far below the combined 38k total and well below the tire load and axle load limits. I have never gotten a ticket. When stopped by the DOT I make a point of stopping very quickly with the trailer. With Ebrake and good brakes ...not a problem. If it took you a 1/4 mile to stop your rig....I'm sure they would have problems. DOT are there for a reason .... to ensure those hauling on our roads are doing it safely within the limitations of their equipment. Those that put a huge camper on the back of a SRW truck or tow huge loads with a SRW exceeding their load limits and the common sense limit are the problem. I'm sure in the US some states would eat me for breakfast. I thinks some states I'm toooooo long even to travel the roads. The only way to exceed your stock DOT tag is to have a licensed manufacturer that builts custom wreckers or haulers to modify and document the modifications to your truck and put a supplemental tag on your door jamb. Once done your registration and insurance must match the door tags. ks
