There is something more wrong than the sensor. The fault is a rationality error. The ECM compares the readings from the crank sensor and cam sensor. If they are off more than a predetermined amount, the fault is thrown. Being that you don't have a fault relating to either sensor being open circuited or shorted to ground, something else is causing the problem.

I suppose it could be an intermittent short/open.

Check the tone wheel mounted on the balancer for missing/bent teeth.

The cam sensor is a "back-up" for the crank sensor, should something happen to the crank sensor/tone wheel.

It does sound like there may be something else going on there. The good news is if you want, you can replace the sensors for little of nothing and see what happens. I just picked up a new crank sensor for $36.00 from Cummins Northwest with overnight shipping. Parts are cheap compared to a couple days worth of downtime. I wouldn't try and get them from the dealer though....$$$

I had the same code generated 2 weeks ago, but I was running the TST box. The truck started and then died setting the CEL and then the code. I then restarted it no problem and later that day used a code reader to erase the code. Code never happened again. I agree with AK Ram - I would buy the sensor too and replace it myself (if it is bad) rather than have the dealer mess with it. The only thing with the camshaft sensor is that you have to be a contortionist to access and r/r it!
