california emissions??

I bought an 06 dodge w/ 5.9 cummins and a 6 speed. I have the options list and it has "california emissions" code NAE. Does this meen the truck has extra emissions controls or is detuned to meet the specs in that state? Thanks alot.

I have an 06 that I bought in Montana (great price by the way) and kept and kept it there for a year at property I own in that state. When I brought it to California I had no problem registering it here. The 06 Cummins is a 50 state engine.

Not true. The only way to registed a vehicle in CA is if it is CARB certified or if it is Federal it has to have over 7,500 miles on the clock. If it has less than 7,500 and not CARB certified then you are out of luck. http://www.dmv.ca.gov/pubs/brochures/howto/htvr9.htm

No difference. CA emissions just means that it gets a CARB certification sticker under the hood, and it got emissions tested at the factory. Fed emissions only requires a sampling (something like every 20-30 units) get emissions tested. CARB requires that every vehicle gets an emissions test from the factory. So, remove the CARB sticker and then it'll be exactly the same as a non-CA truck!

Very true for 3rd gen trucks there is no difference is emmisions between CARB and Fed just the sticker. All CARB truck are tested while Fed are sample tested (whatever the number is I can't remember).

The '03 HO was not available in CA. You had to settle for less or wait for used.

Well, maybe you know more about it than the CA DMV supervisor that I talked with before I bought the truck, but he said that any 06 Cummins engine met CA smog regs, and as I said, I had no problem registering the truck. I also confirmed the 50 state smog rating with Dodge's vice president in charge of the Cummins diesel program (my wife has a very special way on the telephone, don't ask me how she got to the VP from Dodge's customer service line). The 7500 mile requirement applies if the vehicle does not meet CA smog regs.

I am not making this up this is “The Law”. Go to that URL and it states specifically “NOTE: California law prohibits importing and/or registering a new vehicle with less than 7,500 miles at the time of purchase unless it meets or is exempt from California Emission standards. If you acquire a 49-State vehicle (manufactured for all states except California) from another state or country, you may not be able to register your vehicle in this state.”

I could see several possibilities how your truck got registered in CA.
1. It is already certified CARB compliant and have a sticker on the engine. You can verify this by looking at your engine sticker. Does it have a sticker?
2. You already had over 7,500 miles on the clock. How many miles were on it when you register it?
3. The DMV person who verified did not know what he/she was looking for.
4. You related to the Governator and have tramendous pull at DMV.

All 06 CTD might meet CARB standard once tested and certified and wears a CARB sticker. However, if it does not have CARB sticker then it is 49 state AKA Federal truck. Read sdaly reply on post #6 and he is saying the same thing I’m saying. Fed and CARB trucks are the same just the certification sticker that’s all. It is all about documentation and proof.

I bought my 06 MC in OR and drove it to CA. Took it to DMV the next day with a little over 700 miles and got it registered with no problem at all. Now the DMV verifier knew what he was doing. He immediately opened the hood and looked for the engine sticker. He knew exactly where it was and what to look for. He said you are good to go and told me to park my truck and to back inside the DMV office to get my registration paperwork.

Did you have to pay the tax difference between OR & CA.?

OR don't pay sales tax. However, you pay where you register the vehicle.

OK, I feel a little like I'm beating a dead horse here. Believe me, I took the time to check out CA law, and contact the DMV as well as Dodge before I bought my truck out of state. I was fully aware of 7500 mile rule as well as the CA Use Tax (sales tax by another name) rules. My Montana Dodge does have a smog sticker on it, but it did not have any number in the CARB section. This made me a little uncomfortable in spite of the fact that I had been reassured by both the CA DMV and Dodge that the engine was smog legal in CA. I probably did have 7500 miles on the truck when I brought it into the state since I had driven it in Montana, Idaho, and Washington for a year (off and on). However, when I went to the DMV to register the truck, the 7500 mile issue was never even brought up. Also, if I correctly recollect from my research, the 7500 mile rule only gives you the ability to bring a non-smog compliant vehicle into the state if you were NOT a CA resident at the time you purchased the vehicle(at least as the law read in 2006). BTW, all vehicles sold in states adjacent to the state of CA are CARB compliant form what I read. Anyway, that's my story and I'm sticking to it!
PS: I am now starting to wonder if I should take the truck back to Montana and leave it there again. It is cheaper to fly there and use the truck for fishing and hunting, then it is to drive there from here.
