burnt my clutch today

Hi yall, Burnt my clutch today, not fun. I haven't been towed in years. Ive only had this 03 2500 HO 6speed 4x4 for 2000 of its 152K life. I blame the previous owner for slipping it too much in cali traffic but whatever.

Im running stock and I only tow around 10k at most with my gn horse trailer and horses.

I am wondering what is a good replacement for the clutch set up. I don't have a fortune to spend but I want to get a good useable clutch. Ive read about the Southbend, valair, sachs, etc but alot of these seems like performance clutchs and more grabby than a good oe replacement. I feel that i should setup to a performance clutch when I up the power.
Any thoughts?

Plus, I haven't got the trans slid back yet but I'm concerned about the flyweel. Is there any reason to think its badly warped and not worth turning?
Should I just replace it?

If you go with one of the higher end clutches that you mentioned, and you plan on any type of extra power, you will be happier in the long run. If you plan to never add any power, just get a stock replacement and turn the flywheel and you are good to go.

I have read some good reports on the the Napa setup with the SMF. Thats the route I will be going when I need one. The price is reasonable and should hold as good if not little better then stock. You never know it might be the DMF. I have heard of those letting up completely before the clutches go. But what ever you do, let us know what you use and how you make out with it. Cause I have a feeling I am not far behind you... LOL

I've heard of the dual mass flywheels failing. Not much to fail on a solid flywheel. I just put in a NAPA solid flywheel kit. Part #MU52179-1SK. It was right about $600 for the new flywheel and clutch and came with everything needed for installation. I've only put a few thousand miles on, but I'm happy with it so far.

Another thing. I had a pretty bad vibration sitting at an idle since I bought the truck. After installing the solid flywheel and new clutch, the vibration's completely gone. I don't know, but I'm thinking it was the Dual Mass flywheel starting to come apart.

Actually, now that I decided to read...You've got an 03 with an NV5600, not a G56. It has a solid flywheel already. I'd stick with Rockcrawler304's advice and disregard my last 2 posts...

I believe so. From what has been posted on this subject they say the DM flywheel was brought in with the G56.

I'm going the NAPA route. Maybe sooner than later. Mine is dragging going into gear in the cool weather.

Yes. The DMF started with the G56 6 speeds in the late 05 to 06 models.

Yes the '05 with NV5600 is a SMF.

To the OP, if you plan to stay stock then just get a quality stock replacement clutch and be happy. If you will step up the power at some point, decide how much and buy the clutch you will need for that power level now. No sense in buying and installing clutches twice.

Ild love more power, but horse then cart

Yes but I haven't decided the plan for this trucks upgrades yet and upgradeing clutch without power to match makes it hard to drive and noisey. I have the same problem with the classic muscle I work on.

My gears got really draggy when cold too before this clutch went. But then again it is in the mid 20's around here.

Right now I need a Power Distribution Center to fix some electrical problems as well. Not to mention my heat/ac only comes out at the face. So power might be a few dollars later.

Trying to decide how much power and what system to go with is like trying to pick a bunny at the ranch. Choices.

I figure I got plenty of time getting the rest of the truck ready for more power that whatever clutch I choose will be well broken in by then.

I think I am going to go with a parts store/stock clutch and turn the flywheel if it isn't warped like a record.

Thnks for all the advice.

P.S. Anybody know the best way/time to disconect the shift lever? Any other tricks to the trans removal?

From Napa: pn MU2023-1 is a Perfection clutch and runs about $340
From Oreilys: pn k70279-01hd is a Sachs clutch and runs about 422 but I saw it on Rockauto for 350 so they might match that

On the subject of clutches, if the pedal is hard to hold down and the clutch releases close to the floor, does that mean the clutch is about to go out?????
