Angry Bummed.. I think I got a SO

Just checked the id plate under the hood, and it looks like I got a SO. Plate says 250hp at something like 2200 RPM. I really didn't pay a whole lot of attention when I bought it. Engine MFG date 04/03. Will this thing pull my 13K 5er? Hope I don't have to trade it in on a 600!!!

I wouldn't worry, it will pull it just fine. If you want more pulling power go to, Edge Products and buy one of his Edge Attitude Monitors. They are $250 bucks and are VERY easy to install. It monitors boost and EGT. It has 5 settings for power and they advertise up to 80 more ponies and 200lbs of torque.

Don't own one, just familiar with it.

It'll pull it just fine. If you want to outpull a new 600, then get an Edge box and you'll be all .

Actually the it's the Cali that is 235hp. The SO is 250 hp & the HO is 305 hp. If you get a 04.5 then you only get one choise that's the 325/600 50 state legal

The edge monitor doesn't give you the power, its the edge EZ that gives you the power. They run a bit more... I have mine on power level 3 (waiting for gauges to be installed until I go to power level 4) which advertises something like 60 HP and 200 LB FT...

either way it made a huge difference. you'll probably want one pulling 13,000.

Hey, is your truck white and purchased at a dealer in Fallston off of Belair Rd?

I'm just wondering because it was the only SO I saw and when I was looking at diesels last year, I was shocked to see a SO equipped Ram on a dealer lot when the HO was available here in MD.

This one is Black, the white one you saw and this one are probably the only two SO's in the state of MD. i was so excited about finding one in stock, it never occurred to me to check the id plate. Guess an EZ is in the cards before I pull the 5er. Live and learn. It seems to have the power though! Anyone know the torque rating on the SO?

Its been a long time since I looked at one, but I thought the SO's were 250/460.

Go ahead and get that EZ, but I wouldn't wait to pull that 5er without it. It'll work fine, you just might not be the first one up the mountain.

If your intentions are to be the first one up the mountain pulling that 5er, at least get an EGT guage.

BTW, when I bought mine, SO's outnumbered the HO's here in MD by about 5 to 1. But that was when the HO's were only sticks; and not many dealers ordered the 6-speeds to sell off the lot. Mine was the only one I was aware of in this area when I picked it up.

I think the SO is 250 hp/480 lb-ft. I know my SO is a pulling mule, so I don't feel underpowered. Remember, the 03 SO still makes more HP/TQ than all previous years Cummins, and you won't hear many 2nd and 1st gen guys complain about a lack of power. Love mine -Steve

Thanks Guys! I feel a little better knowing that this thing can still pull a house! I'm still trying to find the best $$$ on a X-Monitor, any ideas?

Hate to burst your bubble, but my SO wasn't even close to the power of my HO. It would pull OK if I was on flat ground, but once I hit the slightest incline, it was a DOG. And that was pulling my toy hauler empty...about 6500 lbs. Loaded it did just a little worse.
The main reason I got the new truck was because of the dissapointment in the pulling power of my SO. Sucks I had to learn the hard way, but now I have the truck I'm VERY happy with.

A SO with an $400 Edge EZ will produce more power than a stock HO. I honestly think the bigger difference is manual vs auto. Being able to put the engine at the RPMs it wants to be at when pulling heavy makes a huge difference.
