Brakes squeaking

Hey guys I have noticed the last couple weeks my brakes squeaking seems like the front but not sure. Mainly I hear it below 30mph or less. Especially coming to a stop. Now I had the truck in for a tire roatation and they told me brakes are only covered for the 1 year or 12,000 miles and they would charge me for a diagnostic . So I said dont worry about just figuring the tech would surely say something if he found something. But he didnt. So I am going to pull a tire this weekend any ideas what I should look for. Or how I can stop it from squeaking. Truck has 27,000 miles on it. Thanks for any help.

27k is not that much miles on the pads. Do you tow or live in an area with a lot of hills?
I would check for several things:
rotor: for grooves or cracks, blueing color.
pads: cracks or pieces missing.
check the metal clips that hold the pads to the caliper. This would be a good start in trouble shooting the brake noise.

Assuming the pad material is ok for thickness, I would remove the pads, find a piece of sandpaper that is big enought o lay on a flat surface and have the pad fiton it it for sanding. Gently sand the pad amterial until the glaze is gone. Next use either brake squeal compound (found at auto part stores) or use anti-seize and paint the contact points on the pad where it meets the caliper and re-install. Believe it or not but this is part of the 'brake service' that Honda's get at the dealer every 12,000km and if it isn't done brake squeal is usually the result.

Cracks in the pad surface are OK as long as the pad is not separating from the backing material of the pad. I have TSB's from honda stating that cracking in the pad material is of no concern as long as the material isn't separating. I tcould contribute to noise I guess but not really a necessity to replace otherwise.
