Blown 5.9

Hey fella's. My 06 with 12,000 miles on it threw a rod and im in need of a short block. Wher or who can you guys reccommend to purchase one. I want ceramic coated pistons and a few other "goodies". Chrysler wont honor the warranty because we put in a ATS tranny and had gauges as well. This motor had puked the rear freeze plug three times and the last time it got extremely hot. Cant really say were happy with the no warranty but i guess if a tranny voids your warranty then i am wrong. Not trying to start a war here just looking for parts.....

Thanks in Advance, Zack

Dealer wont cover it because We had an ATS transmission installed. A (Full tranny). And gauges. They are saying the truck is modified. Wasnt my normal deal er as we were on the road. They voided my warranty. I am working with chrysler but it doesnt look good. The truck was in my normal dealer with this tranny when it puked the freeze plugs and they didnt say anything. Im not to worried about them honoring the warranty or not - just gives me a chance to build a killer engine now....But NO IT HAD 12000 twelve thousand on the clock.....

I have the stock auto in the garage..its perfect and only has about 4000 miles on it. The ATS tranny didnt get hurt......got dirty when the rod come thru the side of the block. Im basically looking for a shortblock or a low mileage long block.....I "thought" the 5.9s were all the same as far as the lower half of the engine was concerned. What i mean is can i use my 06 head and turbo and accesories on any year 5.9 block after i build it?

Thanks for any advice guys, Zack

There is an engine for sale over on cumminsforum.com try checking there. I would not take my warranty being voided sitting down. Gauges and tranny aren't eactally like the engine blowing. I have gauges, I tow and worry without them. If my clutch needed replace I certainly would not replace it with a stock one, would that void my tranny warranty or better yet my engine too? Makes no sense.

you can't get a "new" 06 / 07 short or long block from anywhere but DC. They're are proprietary to them until released for general sale. I just went through this and talked to several DC and Cummins dealers.

I'd say unless you cracked the block have your engine rebuilt. Are you saying your truck did this stock, besides the tranny and gauge mod ? If so, I would really fight it cause you're looking at a lot of cash to build it back. Since you're wanting coated pistons and other goodies... a warranty wouldn't do much for that anyway.

Did your engine make any weird noises prior to the rod going through the block?

Guys the only mods to this truck was an ATS tranny and gauges. No fueling mods. I pull a trailer with it not race it. Never seen the track or anything like that. I had a 32' ft gooseneck loaded with little sqaure bales. Not near anything like some of the heavier loads im used to pulling. Anyways i was cruising through N. central Texas (FLAT land) and was runnin about 67 mph. Everything was fine gauges were all nice and comfortable and POP! I mean loud, Engine locked down and ruck came to a ABRUPT stop. SMOKE and fuel and water and oil EVERYW HERE. Got out and looked underneath ( on account of smoke ) and thats when i saw the pan and the block jad a new window option installed. This is on Passengers side of the engine between 5 &6 cyl. I know how much im looking at spendin. Been lookin on EBay and what not. Will post pics when we tear into the engine.

The Moss Magnuson Act was enacted to protect the consumer. The dealership must prove that putting the ATS transmission caused the problem with the engine. That would be like installing same size and style tires from Bridgestone instead of the factory original XYZ ones caused your transmission to fail. Now if the ATS transmission required any changes to the stock ECM program or in fact fools the ECM by altering signals then there could be a problem. Gauges are by no means a reason for voiding a warranty unless due to improper installation the gauge caused a problem with a system required to operate the engine. Again this is on the dealer to prove this. Bow up and hiss back at them.

A good attorney may be needed to get them to react, but I dont see how this couldnt be proven to be a warranty issue. Nothing you installed had anything to do with a failed freeze plug, or a broken rod/piston. If the tranny scattered and it caused the engine to over-rev, maybe. This isnt the case here.

Best of luck to you.

Not that I know much, but for that rod to fail like that, with no prior knocking or rattling, it seems like it must have been a bad casting. Be interesting to see where the initial break occured.

I know in the gas race car engines I've been around, without warming the engine up first, going out an running high RPM's has been known to break a rod or two! It basically snaps the wrist pin end off! Ugly, and expensive! From the blowing of the freeze plugs and such, it sounds like the truck was run hard ( or at least farily hard ) from the second the the fingers left the key! Thats just from what I can think of and my past experiences.

When I needed a short block I got prices from a couple of sources on the web and called all of the dealers within a 50 mile radius and said to the parts guy, I'm going to buy a short block and I'm trying to decide if I'll buy it locally or from the web vendor. Out of about 10 dealers, I got two who agreed to drop the price to $4800 from a list of $6200. I went for the closer one and they delivered and then picked up my core and shipped it back for free. If you're stuck buying one, at least try to avoid paying list for it.
