Can somebody help? I have a 2004 3500 4x4 with 115,700 miles. Just got it and don't know a thing about diesels. The blow-by tube blows out grey smoke. That doesn't bother me, it's the oil. I ran a longer piece of hose back to the cross member and stuck it in a can with vent holes in the top so it can still breathe. It's blowing oil out of the can and going everywhere including on the side of the truck. Anybody got an idea or advice? Thanks.

No. No knocks, clatter, nothing. Runs great, lots of power.

 

Find the biggest trailer and fill it with whatever and find the biggest hill possible. Do about 20 hard ***** to the walls pulls and most of your smoke will go away.

Your either getting buildup on the rings or your having valve issues.

 

Seen a lot from others talking about injectors leaking causing pressure in the crankcase. It does have an odd exhaust smell. Will check oil in the morning. It starts right up in the morning so the injectors wouldn't be leaking down would they? I know nothing about these things!

 

definitely check your oil and make sure it isn't over full from a leaking injector.

 

Oil is fine, actually about 1/2 a quart low. Doesn't smell like fuel. The exhaust smells wierd, not like normal diesel exhaust. Is there anything under the valve cover that could be blocked causing pressure?

 

Is it a 305hp engine or a 325hp engine?

 

Is it filling the can up or is it just kind of making it's way out of the can from the wind under the truck when you are driving? If that's the case then I'd say maybe get a larger can. What kind of a can are you using anyways?

 

325hp. The can isn't a can, it's a plastic 20oz. bottle. I got that idea from another forum last week. I guess it's just blowing the oil back out of the top of the bottle. I only have the extended tube about 1 1/2" - 2" in the bottle. Figured that would be good enough. If you have another idea for a can please tell me. I'll try about anything. What worries me is why is there so much oil coming out? I know the coke bottle sounds stupid but it was the first suggestion I got.

 

You have an 04.5 truck with a Catalytic converter...... Lovely smell hunh...

 

Can you tell if it has ever been pulled with? Hitch in the bed, etc. How does the airfilter look?

Where do you live? Mine will smoke some after a good pull on a cool day. That's normal.

 

I live in Alvin, Tx., just south of Houston. I don't know if it got used to pull or not. Got a goose neck set-up and bumper hitch as well. Neither look very used. I plan on hauling my racecar with it but don't want to hurt the motor. The airfilter was a baddly clogged K&N. Cleaned it up but need to replace it. Also do you know anything about a catch can for this blow-by. Could the cat. be blocked causing back pressure in the crankcase causing the blow-by?

 

Replace the K&N with a Factory Filter. Take the intake piping off and look for dust and dirt in the tube. Also, look at the fins on the compressor wheel of the turbo. If they are full of junk, black looking, then your motor has been dusted and a rebuild may be in your future. Take that K&N and throw it in the trash. They don't filter worth squat for a diesel.

 

Went and got a filter. I'll check those things and change it in the morning. I'll let you know what I find. Thanks.
