My fan belt started squeaking, only on initial start up, in the morning, or if I leave it parked for long enough for the engine to cool down.

I have 120K on the ticker, and have never changed the belt, seems like a good place to start. Anything else I ought to know about? Is this typical of any one accessory on it's way out?

$50 napa belt, all is good. no more squeak.

 

i was having a fraying on the edge of my belt problem, couldn't figure out why? keep looking for a bolt or something that it was rubbing on.

finally one day taking a real close look at it, i discovered i have 8 ribs on all my pulleys except the alternator, it had 7.

the alt went bad and i bought a new one at the local parts store and didn't realise the difference. i have a new belt under the seat with the new pulley they gave me.

my Gates belt still works fine with 7 ribs, I'll change them someday.

 

spray some water on the belt using a spray bottle when its making the noise, if the noise goes away you need a new gates gator back belt.

if the noise does not go away then you probably have a bad bearing.
