Belt Coming Apart
Wow, a clutch on the alternator, that's a new one on me...
Spare us the smartass comment. See the other thread in this forum. There is a TSB. My shredded belt wrapped itself around the fan pulley, required a flatbed, and the truck being out of service for three days.
If you don't have anything of value to contribute, then don't.
Wexman,
I didn't intend at all for that to come off like sounding like I was trying to be a jerk, or that I was questioning the other post.
All I was trying to communicate was that I had never heard of a clutch on an alternator, so I was surprised, and I wonder why they did that.
I'm sorry if I didn't communicate well. I absolutely was not trying to sound like a smart ***.
If I did, it really was not intentional, and please accept my appology.
Jeff

Excellent. In retrospect I can see how someone could take my post in a tone other than how I had intended. Anyway, glad we are good.
Back on topic, I'm really curious about this alternator clutch. I wonder if it was intended to place the load on the belt less abruptly than kicking on the field coils? It's an interesting idea that I had never seen or heard of.

From my experiences I think the different brands have alot to do with belt not lasting. I bought a dayco belt that lasted 6,000 miles real tight on installation and chirped on shut down. Going back to goodyear gatorbacks, no chirp on shut down.
My dads 2002 town and country van had a squeak we couldn't fix, miles down the road we find the Alternator overrun clutch bearing bad.The clutch is a one way type clutch, when you slow the engine abruptly it allows the armature to contunie with the momentum that it has until it slows down to engine speed.
My 05 CR ate 1/2 of of two belts in two days, the second was a Dayco that sounded like a cricket farm as soon as I started it up ,and eight miles later I heard that gravel on the tires sound and it was half gone also but it seems to do fine with 1/2 of the belt in place ?
There is one other factor, this is a CR to Ford conversion and I used the Ford power steering pump but all apear to be in line,I ordered the clutch pulley today .

i bought my truck used with 82k on the clock. now it has 114k on it. belt looks good, havent replaced it since i bought it. whats the service interval for the belt? mine chirps at shut down; but not every time. i guess its still ok.?
