Bearings?

Had new tires installed today. Tech pointed out that both front wheels had play when held from top of tire and pushed in and out. He said that it was probably bearings. Truck only has 50k mi. with stock wheels/tires until today. No towing, and only light load in bed.
Both bearings? Could it be something else? Could something have caused this to happen? Called dealer and they said that bearings would be covered by 36k mi. warranty. Too late for that. This could get expensive. Also, leaving for 1000 mi trip this weekend. Now, maybe not.
Any info would be appreciated.
Thanks,
Rick

Have a front end shop look at it....they can tell you more definitively than a tire shop!

Thanks for the replies. I have an appointment at a suspension shop tomorrow. Jacked up front end this morning to take a visual, and there is no movement from anything other than the wheels with back and forth pressure. If it were the ball joints, wouldn't I see play in the components behind the wheels with movement of the wheel? Everything seems to be tight back there.
Anyone else?
Rick
