Battery seeping. Is this normal?
OK month and a half or so ago my Passenger battery basically swelled up, got hot, and over flowed battery acid down the wheel well. When you felt that battery it was HOTTER than the drivers side. It was 10PM and the only place open was autozone so I went down and bought 2 brand new batteries. The new batteries however are NOT maintenence free. You have to ck them. About 3 weeks ago I popped off the cap to ck and they were a little low. So I added some water. I did fill them up to the top however and some of the water came out. Since then it has been seeping some out the top ( Passenger side again). I just keep wiping it off. Tonight I felt both batteries and they seem to be the same temperature when you touch them. Will this seeping stop when the water level goes down a bit? Thanks!
It is not recommended to overfill battery cells especially in warmer weather because the natural fluid expansion in warmer climates can push excess electrolytes from the battery. If the water is at the bottom of each cell then that is best,as it will allow for expansion of the fluid. Topping off should be done with distilled water because all of the impurities have been removed, and will not add any unwanted contaminates into the battery cells. Yes! It will stop once the fluid level drops to a safer level that will allow for expansion.
You might want to clean the battery terminals as well as the cables where they join the terminals. You may find corrosion under the rubber sheathing. Be sure to check and clean each of the ground straps.
