I test drove the 6 speed and the automatic before finally settling on the automatic. On the highway the automatic is turning fewer rpms, so it should be better for mileage on the open road. If I did a LOT of towing, I would have probably chosen the 6 speed. So far with 21,000 miles I am happy with the automatic. Test drive them both and make sure they have the same rear end for a true comparison.

i have the 6-speed and i love it. i dont pull anything but maybe a boat. the only prob is im gonna need a new clutch in a little while do to the way i drive and the accessories i have put on it . i have 17k miles right now. i think their starting to put 3:73's in the newer 06 as an option. mine has the 4:11 but with my 35's it equals out. if ur gonna put any kind of tires id go with the lower gears.

I have the 6spd and love it. The RPM could be a bit lower in 6th gear but I Still am getting an average 18.4mpg (hand calculated) with 80/20 highway/city driving. I keep the CC set at 69-71mph on the highway. I only have about 2400 miles on it so that number should go up a bit more. I am just getting ready to tow somw heavier loads to help the break in better.

I have the auto in my Mega Cab 2500 and it can be best described as acceptable.
The auto seems to have a mind of it's own, erratic shift points, rough shift points. In the auto transmission department , Ford and Chevy have Dodge beat hands-down.
I have a brother who has a 6 speed and he loves it. It turns a few more RPM's at highway speeds, but is pretty much bullet-proof.
Just my opinion.......

I agree w/ 1stdodge. Seems to "hunt" for gears alot. I was thinking just yesterday, if I did it all over again, I would go w/ a 6 speed.

I’ll stick with the 6 speed. If the Aisin 6sp auto was available for the ‘06’s I might have been tempted. Wish they had a G57 tho…….my last truck was a 7.3L PSD with the ZF 6 speed and the OD ratio was better for running empty. But, I bought the truck to tow with and when hooked up to a load the G56 is sweet……….

I have a six speed and I really like it. Myself personally, I would not go with the 4.10's unless you are pulling something huge though!

I enjoy my 6 speed, but it's alot of shifting, but it's better than having all the trans. problems I've had in the past with autos.Last time an auto went out on me I was 600 miles from home with my fifthwheel camper, and a car full of kids. , I made it home sliding in and out of 2nd&3rd gears, with no reverse or OD.I kissed the ground when I pulled up to my driveway. If I want an auto, I'll drive the family car.

You have 4.10's and they were the option. 3.73's have always been standard. With the G56 6sp, they are the only option. You cant get 4.10's unless you put them in yourself. My truck with the 6sp and 3.73's probably turns the same rpm's as your NV5600 with 4.10's.

6 Speed here, wouldn't have it any other way now that I've had it. I hear al lot of people crying about the RPM's on the highway. You don't need to be going that fast anyhow. I can run right at 64 MPH & 2000 RPM's even. That is sweet for towing, whereas my 47RE acted downright stupid with a heavy load on the highway. Constantly worrying about should I be in OD, is is going to try to drop down on this grade, etc.

Get the 6 Speed.

6 speed all the way. I have never been impressed with dodges 48re. My 05 auto was marginal at best. This new g56 is one sweet shifting gal. My auto 05 averaged around 14mpg my 06 6 speed gets 17 all day in town and 21 on the highway, thats at 70-72. Once you get to 75-80 it drops a little. Thats with a corrected speedo, checked by gps. I love my truck!!

What are you going to do with the truck? If you are towing alot of load or don't mind driving 65 you would be happy with the G-56. If you are in town alot or drive highway 70+ auto would be great. To be honest I have the NV-5600 and I love it, but earlier this year I would have traded it and got an auto shortbed, but the dealerships wanted too much difference so I thought the difference could go into this truck. (besides it's a nice trophy, why get rid of it?) Now that I think of it I wish I had challenged one of the guys on my rodeo team to a race. He had an 05 with the G-56 and Edge w/Attitude. He might have been able to out accellerate me because of the gearing, but I would have been able to blow by him when he hits his governor.
