Auto Trans Qustion/Suggestions needed
Hello;
I just picked up a 2003 QC 2500 4x4 automatic; It's my first 3rd gen and I'm very excited to have it!!!!!
It has 226,xxx miles on it; I got it at a great price, understanding the transmission would need rebuilt (snap-ring broken between 3rd and 4th gear; still functions, just found broken piece in the pan)
I've been driving the truck in my sig for 15+ years, so these automatic transmissions are something I am not educated about at all. Luckily, I have a family-friend with his own transmission shop for the last 20 years and I trust his work.
I just learned that these transmissions do not pump fluid through the torque-converter when running and sitting in park. Is this true? If so, how big of a deal is this? My transmission guy tells me it is not a big deal, just don't let the truck idle in park for longer than 5-10 minutes.
Since I'm going to be rebuilding this transmission; looking to get the most bang for my buck. I plan to do some mild mods (Smarty Jr, has MRBP exhaust, will also put an air-intake on it). not gonna race the truck; it will be a daily driver, towing my trailer as needed but running empty 75% of the time.
What do y'all recommend? My transmission guy quoted me $2500 for total rebuild and beefing it up ( a billet-shaft/spline, or something..?) he seems very confident he can build the trans to last for what I want and I trust him. However, he did not recommend making any mods to address the lack of fluid pumping when the truck is in park. Should I look at doing something for this too?
Thanks in advance for any and all replies.
