Auto trans question for 06

A buddy of mine lost his trans in the middle of ND last night. His truck is an auto 3500 4x2. Will a trans from a 4x4 work and what is needed to make it work?
I have checked the classifieds and sent out a few PM's and we are only looking for a decent runner, not a built up unit as he just wants to get it up and running for the farm and no more hauling. He bought a new Ferd last week and tried to eek out one more trip with his one million kilometer Ram.

Thanks

As in a straight swap? No. The 4x4 has a different tail section because of the transfercase. I'm not sure what is involved in swapping the tail sections either.

So far no answers of confirmation on if it can work. I am guessing the tail shaft id the difference but need to confirm. When he bought a replacement engine, he had the option to buy the trans to and declined and that engine came out of a 4x4...so...maybe it is do-able.

The tailshaft on a 4x4 is longer than on a 2wd.

You would need to swap the tailshaft, and the rear housing to make it work. it is doable, just a pain in the butt.

Like pind said, it is doable. But..............you will need the tools, time, and info to do it. Believe it or not, most junk yards will be able to tell you. They have a compatability book that crosses almost every part that ever came on a vehicle! They may not be able to walk you thu the process but they can tell you IF it will fit or can be made to fit. If yer going to do it yourself, see if you can round up an ATSM manual for the tranny. It will walk you thru the steps and also list any problems with the tranny that you can address before you hang it.

Good luck, man.

Thanks for the info. I was not certain about the compatibility but this helps.
He got the truck home. It will not pull a trailer over 30 mph but empty it will shift up to 3rd and not sure about OD. I have not seen the truck or driven it myself, just passing on what I was told late last night. Going to have a look after Christmas.
