auto trans help

Hello: I have a 06 mega cab 4x4with 48re auto trans that at 140k started to act up going from P to D or reverse truck wants to take off and revs up pretty high when shifted to D or N also have to hold brake or shift into N for it to run right.

If rebuild necessary what would make this a bit more durable without breaking the bank at 80k shift module and transducer replaced. Service every 20 to 30k as when new towed a lot from Az. to New mexico now maybe pulls 7 to 10k a couple times a year. put smarty jr in at 130k and only run SW1 Tq 4 Tm 2

Torque converter has failed, typical problem. If the pan is not full of metal you can probably get by with a TC. Just make SURE the cooler gets replaced or flushed correctly.

Thanks no 6 I figured as much from others on this forum. at 140k I'm told best to rebuild and go with RV converter. Also to flush correctly involves what? cooler and both lines to trans? I parked the truck and won't drive till it goes to trans shop when I find one here who I feel will do a good build.

The front cooler has a thermostat in it that will just bypass fluid around the main cooler body of the temp is below 140 degrees. If you don't remove and block the bypass the cooler never gets flushed properly.

The heat exchanger and lines are easy as they are an open path.

TC failure it was! I found a shop who recomended a rebuild of my tranny with parts very close to your signature no 60 oh no- single disc TC, moderate valve body, shift kit I should end up with a more durable trans which will hold up with Smarty Jr and was reasonable. Thanks for the heads up on flush procedure This shop does it corectly but he uses a syn trans fluid which is not ATF+4? He has 06 and 97 and builds quite a few 48res and says it works fine! Thank you for your help

As long as the build is compatible with the fluid its not a problem.

FYI, ATF+4 is considered a synthetic fluid also, its a group 3 syn not a full syn, but they are close.

Haven't paid for it yet but should be about 3k. I got 140k on the stock unit and a lot of it pulling moderate loads. I wanted to get the basic upgrades to improve the faults in the original without getting to crazy on the cost.
