ATF Leaking at inspection plate

I have a very bad ATF leak coming out of my inspection plate on my tranny. What would the cause of that be?

Are you sure it's ATF?

there is a vent behind the convertor if the trans is overful, sitting at a angle with the fluid hot or trans fluid hot it will push out some fluid. give it a day if it is still leaking maybe convertor seal or pump seal bad

Rpainter is right on that vent and how it will leak if the transmission is overfilled. On my trucks, I never fill them any fuller than about 3/4's up on the "Full" mark on the tranny dipstick. When the transmission gets hot, they do tend to leak or seep if they are at or above the very top line on that tranny dipstick.

I checked the fluid level, drove it for a while, and it still has a bad leak. I pulled the inspection cover and its defiantly coming from inside the trans. What are the reasons for this?

Mines doing the same thing and been doin it for awhile. I check the tranny fluid often and it is still good. I'm starting to wonder when the dealership serviced the tranny if they overfilled it. I haven't noticed any problems with the tranny in shifting or anything.

Nope, thats just not true unless the stick is mismarked. I run 1 1/2 to 2 quarts over full all the time towing 23k with no leaks. The 48RE has unused capacity over the factory full mark.

If you aren't way over full at hot idle in neutral then its time to pull the trans. Several different things that could be leaking so you will have to drop it see whats up.

Well Sir,... no disrespect to you, but on my 2006 it WILL seep out if overfilled!

I don't doubt you, but, its the exception rather than the norm. A lot of builders wll recommend running them overfull as there is extra capacity.

If you cannot run even to the full line on the dip stick when the trans is bot there is problem somewhere.

I am running built 48RE and 47RH with both over filled and have no issues with leaks as long as the boots and tubes were inserted correctly.

Any leaks I have had have been the direct result of incorrectly inserting the tube and boot into the trans. Once that was rectified no more leaks.

When I check mine tranny fluid, I'm over full at hot idle in Neutral. I still have a small leak from the insp cover. I've never had to put extra tranny fluid in it. It's leaking and I don't have to replenish the fluid in the tranny. And my coolant reservoir is full and hasn't had to be replenished either. Been to the dealership too, they told me it was normal. It's been like this for over a year and a half. I'm just scratching my head. I'm just nervous with the tranny since when I bought it new I had the tranny go out at 3,000 miles and now I see fluid at the insp cover.

Yep, hard telling where its coming from and what it is. Could be just a very small leak on the TC seal, a seam in the TC, leak on the pump gasket. If it isn't dropping the level of either fluid or coolant just drive it and check on a regular basis.
