So i was coasting down a hill yesterday..... when clank... clank... clank goes the engine and white smoke starts coming out the exhaust. Pulled over to the side and shut it off right away... but then had to move it a bit further down the road cuz I was on a blind corner people fly around.
I thought it was the head gasket gone... even though I have studs.... just got the call... dropped a valve No waiting to hear how much damage it did

Got the call today.... engine is toast.
Here's some pics.....

and as you can see in this last pic... it cracked the block....

I read on here people have had valves drop from too much heat... the seats failing?
Has anyone had the valve just break in half? Just that's what mine did...

No warranty. It was an american truck brought up to canada. Dodge doesn't honor that.
60,000 miles on it.
With how much it's going to cost to replace. I'll probably be better off parting the rest of the truck out and just buying another one.

They can be bored, and Cummins has oversized pistons available, but the head and that injector will need replacing also. I would still inquire a few places about rebuilding. 2nd option, the parts guy at my local Cummins dealer told me that they will now sell a brand new 5.9 for the Dodge trucks. You might want to contact a Cummins dealer before you part the truck out.
Doesn't look alot worse then my engine in my 03 when I dropped a valve. I bought a new head and piston. I needed a new injector also. My bore just needed to be rehoned. Put her back together and she's still running great.
Good luck to ya,

I priced out a couple engines. The brand new ones from cummins are crazy expensive.... not even worth considering.
Found a couple used ones around.
Corygale's suggestion is the cheapest option so far.

Get a price on sleeving that cylinder and have the whole engine gone thru. Bet it's cheaper than you think.
If it were me, I'd go this route especially since you don't know how the last owner treated her. I'd get all new bearings and get the whole assembly balanced and everything blueprinted. Cheap? No. If you're going to push it a little when it comes to power? Then it's money VERY well spent.

You might want to check the 3rd gen classifieds. There's an 03 long block, an 03 in pieces and a set of 04.5 pistons there now. I could be mistaken but won't the 03 hard parts work in the 06?
