Started my truck yesterday when it was about 10 deg and when she fired up it went straight to the high idle of 1000 rpm. This has never happened before, it usually starts and idles for a few minutes at 750 before climbing to 1000. Anyone else experience this?

mine has done that a few times when its been pretty cold,i thought it was the x2 doing cold protection or somthing cuz it started right after i installed it.i dont really like it doing that,doesnt give the oilpresure much a of a chance to get up,glad im not the only one.is urs hard to make it go away?i let the ebraake off and put on the brake and pushed the clutch in and it would only go away after tapping the throttle,then it idled normal then after a min or 2 the high idle came on.

 

With an auto just push in the brake or put it in gear, can't comment on the standard.

 

Normal, just tap the brake she'll settle back down to normal idle.

 

Mine does it also, I wish it would idle for a couple minutes first and then bump up........... like my 2002

 

In the last 10 starts it has only done it the one time and that is it. Might have been a freak deal but seemed strange. I do have a X2 so maybe that is doing it? Still runs and idles fine, the truck drops off when I push the brake and will come back up on the high idle when running for a few minutes. Thanks for the replies.

Thats whats they're supposed to do when they are below a certain tempature when you start them. It's pretty helpful if it's -20'F.

 

I hope it NEVER gets to -20 around here.!!!!!!.. That just sounds MISERABLE!! When it gets "cold" here as it is now, my truck goes to low idle, then after about 20-30 seconds, it ramps up to 1000 RPM until you touch the brake pedal to take it out of park. The new D-Max in the 4500 series goes to 1200 RPM immediately!

I believe that is incorrect. When they start they run at the normal 750rpm for a few minutes and then go up to the high idle, that is why I asked. I am very familiar with the high idle feature just thought it was strange for the truck to start and run at 1000 rpm immediately, seems tough on the engine at sub freezing temps before the oil has warmed a little.

Our 05 5500 Duraturd goes to 1500 righ at start-up, too high and too noisy, makes all sorts of funny noises when cold.

At -30 mine does the same thing.
I think they are just trying to get the oil pressure up faster which is a good thing.
The extra revs wont hurt any thing with the engine not under load.

 

I think the Cummins engineers know what their doing. There's a few parts that are only "splash oiled" like the cam I believe. They only get lubed from oil being flung up by the crank and such. If it's coldddddd... the engine needs more rpm to fling that dead dinosaur juice up from the crank to the cam.

 

YEah, makes me cringe sometimes... Its not like these things need ANY help in the failure department. In fact, mine is at the "hospital" right now. I think its logged more miles "on the hook" than under its own power!
