Might wanna check registration laws in your state, i don't think you can put a 12v in a 05 and register it cause it doesn't meet 05 emission standards, again Im just thinkning out loud
A 12v can be had cheaper than a common rail. After you get a stand alone controller and all the misc parts to put in a 12v I don't think you will save much if any over rebuilding your current motor. A stock rebuild is around 4-5k. If you decide to sell the truck later it will turn off most buyers with an old non stock motor in a newer truck. What is wrong with it now?

It will cost you more in the long run than a rebuild or different engine. Its not a trivial thing to do and resale is zilch cuz your gonna have to hack a lot of things.
Get another CR or rebuild the one you got.

its pretty do able fairly cheap if you can do all the work yourself, ive done it and have been driving the truck every day put almost 17k miles on it since, love the truck you can check out my build in the cummins conversions thread just finished puttin a 12v in a 98 24v truck everything bolted up easier it turned out pretty good so far i put a 5spd instead of the at and i think im gonna start looking for a 6spd for to long to swap in
