Anyone do a valve set yet on 3rd gen cummins?

I have 195,000 km on my 2004.5 ram diesel. I want to do a valve set. has any1 done it yet? our engines have pushrods right?(not overhead cam and rollers?). also do we just go by valve overlap or do we need timing marks and where are they? also is a engine turning tool needed or not?also how hard is it to do number 5 and 6?any info would be appreciated thanks.

Yes I have done mine a couple times just because I like to keep an eye on things and it is so darn easy. yes they have push rods. Use the timing mark. The damper/balancer has a mark on it. Straight up 12o'clock and you do half the valves. Rotate 360 and do the other half. I don't have that with me, but I am sure someone will post it. I use the alternator nut and turn the engine counter clockwise. I just bought a barring tool and will try that next time. 5 is no problem and niether is 6 if you have long arms or something to get you up in the truck further.

Heck, I've got my book here...

Remove the cyl head cover, and rotate the motor until the timing mark is at 12:00. If you don't have a barring tool, you can probably rotate the motor backwards via the alternator pulley.

If both rockers on #1 piston are loose, set intake on 1, 2, 4 and exhaust on 1, 3, 5.

If both rockers on #1 are not loose, then do intake 3, 5, 6 and exhaust on 2, 4, 6.

Then rotate one turn and do which ever set you didn't do...

Feeler goes between the rocker arm socket and the cross bar. Done with engine cold.

If intake is not between .006 and .015 or if exhaust is not between .015 and .030 then they need to be adjusted. If one does need adjusted lock nut torque is 18 ft/lbs, and recheck after tightening lock nut.
