Anti Spin Chattering
Got into some heavy wet snow going up my driveway today.Thought the truck was going to shake itself apart with the chattering fom the rear diff.Truck was in 4WD.Had to back off because I thought I would break something. Is there anything I can do to prevent this?Additive maybe? Thanks for any help.
Although the book says the AAM system does not require limited slip additive, there was a thread a few years back about someone who used no-additive oil and had chattering while turning that was cured by adding additive...
I recently asked a guy at Redline if I should be running 75-140NS (No limited slip additive) or the regular 75-140 (that already has additive in it).
He basically said that the AAM system shouldn't need additive, but that the additive would actually reduce friction and temp at the contact area and wouldn't hurt anything, so may as well run the 75-140...
Anyhow, IMHO it wouldn't hurt to try adding some LS additive and see what happens.

Add a bottle of additive.I had a issue on start off hot with a 10k gooesneck hooked and on left turns.I have the Amsoil Severe Gear 75w90.I bought a bottle of additive at a Advance Auto parts off the shelf.Fixed mine in a few miles.Buy some, slide under truck and pour it in.BUT I think your describing wheel hop(axel wrap) which these trucks are prone to do.Other then traction bars not much else you can do but live with it.
I doubt it was the pumpkin chattering, since you didn't mention turning on a dry road and especially since there isn't any clutch packs in it... probably axle wrap like HDawg said - the 3rd Gens ride nice for their load capacity, but it's accomplished with relatively long leaf springs, which are more susceptible to winding up when the leaf pack is under engine torque.
Traction Bars would eliminate the problem.

Thanks guys for all your advice. From all your insight the problem does seem to be axle wrap and not a limited slip issue.I'll have to decide what ,if anything I'm going to do about it.Thanks,Andy.
