Question Another Noobie Injector Pump Question

Hey Guys, I've got a question reguarding the injector pump on my '05. My truck was running very poorly, No Power LOTS of black smoke under load, so I took it into the dealer, thinking anything wrong would be covered under warrenty. Apparently I got some water in my fuel which took out the lift pump for sure, maybe the injector pump and injectors too, so of course they won't cover it under warrenty.
How long would it take to burn out the high pressure components? I put about 100miles on before i got her into the shop. Would the injector pump be gone from that? Also what injector pump do i have on this truck? the VP44 or the CP3? The dealership is working on it now, hopefully they don't have to change anymore than the lift pump but i'm prepared for the worst. If i was to put a FASS system or something similar, do i have to take the factory lift pump out of the tank or can it force feed the FASS pump?

Hopefully it's just the LP!!

No, the FASS will not pull fuel through a bad factory lift pump. If changing the LP gets it running, I would try putting some additive like Power Service in each tank of fuel to try and clean everything up. Water doesn't make a good lube for your CP3!

What if I put a new factory LP in? Will it feed the FASS system or is it one or the other? The dealership is putting a new LP in so I don't want to have to pull it out to run the extra filtration the FASS offers.

FYI....the VP 44 is an INJECTION pump found on the 98.5 to 2002 24v ISB. Your truck has the Cp3 which is only a HIGH PSI pump. The lift pump delivers about 8 psi to your hp pump. It's a two stage pump. The fuel enters a smaller pump on the back side of the Cp and that elevates the psi to around 250 psi. From there it goes to the main body where it it elevated to 5000 to around 26000 psi depending on input from various sensors and the ecm. All of your fuel lines and fuel manifold log are at the same psi all the way up to the injectors.

I see. Thanks. So what would cause the engine to smoke like that under load. I thought black smoke meant too much fuel, if the lp wasn't keeping up there wouldn't be enough.

Just out of curiosity isn't there a "water in fuel" idiot light on the dash? Did that light ever come on? Is that light working? If the bulb is good then how can the dealer void the warranty?

which dealer did you take it to??? if it was big 4, i would tell them to f-off and take it to east side. They fix alot of stuff that shouldn't. If they dont, call the dealer that you bought the truck from and deal with them. They would not warrenty a u joint at big four, but the other dealers would even with the lift. They are a-holes. sorry to rant, but i really hate the local dealers here. Most of them hate me to. But i cant remember which shop it is, but they will rebuild cp3's cheaper that you can find anywhere. As for you pump, talk to kevin dougles at DPS in calgary. He charges 1000 plus tax installed for the 150 system.(filtration system) He will probable be cheaper that what the dealer with anything from injectors to cp3 to pumps. just some thought.

its either DPS or Big Dog Performance. just some thoughts for ya. i think he even has some used parts around his shop.

The truck is at Tower Chysler, and yeah I'm starting to think they're the same way. There is a "water in fuel" light and it did come on once, but only once and after i drained the filter it went off. If there was as much water in the fuel as they say the light should have come on a few more time, you would think.
I bought the truck from Crosstown in Edmonton and they drove it down to me. I'll call them today and see what they can do. For the filter, I was going to DPS, I got my Edge box from their store in Lethbridge. I'm starting to wish i had found these forums 6 months ago when i bought the truck.
Its going to be a interesting day.

I just talked to a guy at DPS. He said he's hear of problems with the FASS systems being noisy and stop pumping. Any one had this problem? He also said I may have blown the intercooler. I guess they're weak on the 04.5 and 05s. He seen them blow at 25 psi. I've had a lot more than that on it. It just keeps getting better and better. At least the intercooler should be warrentied. Still about the LP. We'll see where it gets me.

As for the water in tank issue...I would fight that one severly!!! The reason, check the top of your tank. There are two emmisions nipples that are unused on our trucks and are left open. To make matters worse they sit in a valley/depression on the top of the fuel tank. If water/mud/snow/etc collects in the valley then it will get sucked inot the tank as the fuel level drops and a low pressure(vacuum) forms in the tank. It very well may be the main source of fuel contamination on our trucks. I heard about these fittings and went out to my truck thinking they must be blocked or not allow air flow or something and low and behold I was able to suck and blow on a piece of vacuum hose that I attached to the fittings. I immediately put temporary hoses on the fittings to at least get them out of the depression/valley. Later on I attached hose to it and ran the hose to a fuel filter that I mounted up near the fuel filler area so that the system is now filtered and water shouldn't enter. There are some pics in my gallery and I can take more of my fix if needed.

I would highly recommend pointing this out to them and fighting the warranty denial based on this. If the dealer doesn't listen then I would contact Dodge customer assistance and plead your case with them. Water in the tank may be a result of this major flaw in the tanks...not necessarily bad fuel. Just in case though...where did you fill up so I can avoid the same station?

Thats where the line gets blurry. I work on a drillin rig and fill the truck w/ rig fuel which is dyed. Been doing it since i bought the truck and haven't had a problem till now. I know the rig tank is clean, it circulates constantly and is filtered for both dirt and water. The rig engines never have a problem ( 3 detriot 60 series).
I HAVE had to bog through some deep water on the way into the rig which could have gotten into the tank. Thanks for the info. It gives me so ammo in my fight. I hope they don't say anything about the dye in the fuel. I put some pump fuel in before i took it in so hopefully its thinned out a bit. Shouldn't matter, fuel is fuel.
