Expect your OCI to be reduced by using the 5W-40 -vs- the 15W-40 due to a reduced TBN level. The 5W-40 is designed for diesel engines with a particulate filter.
arkapigdiesel- is correct. amsoil's 5w-40 oil is backwards compatible-but if your truck is not the "newer" diesel engine with all the egr,etc crap-you are better off using amsoil's 15w-40 oil. amsoil even states this in their literature.
I just went to the 5w30 HDD and so far it is good oil and much better then the Rotella 5w40 synthetic that I tried before I went to Amsoil. As far as the 5w40 goes if your only going to run it 10K miles then I see not reason not to use as 5w40 synthetic is listed as ok to use year round, at least for the 2006 model engine.
I have used amsoil for many years with no problems. I use the 15w40 marine oil. Everyone has their own opinion but I would wait until you have at least 5-10k miles on your engine to make sure your rings are seated good. To speed things up you could load up a heavy trailer and work that engine pretty hard to seat the rings even faster. John Deere even recomends dino oil for break in on our new tractors and then switch to synthetic.
15W-40 and AMSOIL oil filter, put it in at 55,000 miles, but the oil can be switched over for trucks that are babied at 15 to 20,000 and pulling a heavy load all the time around 5,000 would probably work. The main reason to wait is for everything to set and any grindings that are going to happen early on might as well go out with a 3-5000 mile oil change with cheaper oil. My dad's 2000 sounds better since it's been switched over. I can't hear a difference on mine.

I was using 10k but changing filter every 5k and adding a little oil. I am now using the new amsoil oil filter and they are telling me it will last 25k. That makes me a little nervous going that long. I know the oil will be ok because I use to send in oil samples up to 30k miles but dirt is dirt and the filter will only hold so much--not sure how long I will go. Anyone else using the new oil filter from amsoil?

Also i Use a Oilgaurd By Pass System . So Far i Have 112k on The same oil ,Sent It In For a Look See ,Report Back All Is Like New Oil !

15w40 HDD oil here. The 5w30 is a little more saltier for my taste and has the same service interval as the 15w40. Also running the Amsoil ea oil filter, plan to run until oil analysis suggests to change it out. Hoping for 30k or more with bypass filter.

That's what I was using but now I'm trying the amsoil 25k filter. Just makes me nervous because I'm not use to going past 5k on a filter except for my peterbuilts.
Im an AmsOil dealer so Im gonna try to answer this the best I can.
On our 3 diesel trucks (02' D-Max, 93 5.9, and new 6.7 Cummins) we run AmsOil. We run 15-40Diesel/Marine oil in the 93 and the 02 because its a good all around oil and its recommended for use in them.
We just started the 6.7 on the new CJ-4 Rated 5w-40 and we're keeping a watchful eye on its performance.
15w-40 will run you at least $7.00 a quart but its well worth it in my opinion. And when you look at the length between changes and the number of changes you must undergo with regular petroleum oil, your saving money in the long run. Not to mention saving in costly engine repair and extended engine life.

3000 Series 5w-30 is top dog in diesel oil Its also top dog in price. It'll run you about $10 a quart, but again, well worth the price. Its mainly for true heavy-duty applications and probably ideal of ya'lls highly modified Cummins'. But again, money talks and 15w-40 can do the job.

The new 5w-40 from AmsOil is designed specifically for the 2007 and newer diesel engines, like the 6.7, to help meet the set emission standards. But just because its for the new engines and their costly emission components doesn't mean its a costly oil. It will run you about $8.00 and if your running a 2007 or newer engine, its really the only oil you can run because it meets the tight CJ-4 testing standards. If you have a 2007 and your not running an oil, any oil, thats not CJ-4 certified, your asking for trouble. Also, this oils is backwards-compatible and it wouldn't hurt to run it in an older diesel engine. If anything, it'll help cut down on soot and other oil break-down deposits.
However, the company cautions that drain intervals should only be extended when monitored by oil analysis.
