Amsoil Bypass Filter Change Question

I have been running Rotella Syn and changing it roughly twice a year (5-6k usage). Do 95% in town driving is why I don't go any longer and the Blackstone analysis all come back normal. I am also running the amsoil bypass. Should I put on a new filter on at each change? Yearly? The last time I did it, I unscrewed it, dumped it, and filled it with new just get most of the old oil out. See any issues with this?

Really considering the Amsoil AME formula and changing the primary twice a year.

You should be more than ok running it for two changes. I wouldnt even bopther dumping the oil out of it. It will be fine allowing it to just pass through the filter and join the new oil IMO. I have my bypass installed on my truck but I am waiting to make the switch to full synthetic before I pipe the oil through the 40 dollar filter. I will be running mine 18k between oil changes, and will change the filter then.

The bypass filter is designed to go about 40k before change is needed. In fact, it filters better as it goes along.

I'd say you are just fine doing what you are doing, which is changing once a year.

Ditto...1.5 to 2 quarts of older oil is not going to hurt anything.

I was changing both filters at 10,000 and doing an oil analysis. Came back great. I would change filters and oil at 20,000 miles.

I think that is even over kill; now I am running filters until 15,000 and doing an oil analysis. Probably change filters and oil again at 30,000 miles.

Are you running the AME oil? Noticed you have an older engine, that might help with the longtivity because I dont think you have the in cylinder EGR. Thanks guys.

I change my oil and main filter every 7500 miles (or slightly less) and I change my bypass filter every other oil change. My oil analysis comes back with great reports. I am running the Valvoline Premium Blue 15w40 oil.

That actually IS a once a year bypass filter change for me.

I have considered going to changing both filters when I change my oil. Considering what the bypass filter does for my oil it's price is cheap insurance.

My bypass system tells me to change 250-500 hrs. The longer ya run it the better. Mine is a paper element (Like a toliet paper roll) Is that what you guys have? Also does the oil still get dark?

One other method you could consider to "purge" out the used oil in the bypass system is to disconnect the return line (if this is easy given your particular installation) and run the return line into a good quality container. Start the engine and run it until the oil comes out looking like new oil. Shut the engine off, reattach the return line, and top up as necessary. Obviously if it is taking an incredibly long time don't run you engine out of oil, but basically running a quart or 2 through the bypass filter should purge the old oil out. A bypass filter will have a restrictor in the oil line so you will not have full oil pressure coming out your return hose.

If your bypass system contains a litre or 2 of oil, and it takes 14 litres to fill the system, your leaving about 10-15% of the used oil in the engine. Not the end of the world, but if your taking the time to change oil anyway, why not do it completely.

If the oil analysis are coming back fine, I don't understand the urge to change the oil.

Yep, the amsoil is good 2 micron and from what I have heard the soot which is basically carbon is submicron. I am not certain on the element, I would assume its one of their synthetic materials. Even with my bypass it still gets black.

I think I am still going to dump the my filter between changes. Might not pour the new oil in it though. Might start it up and then top it off again once it starts coming out the return hose which I have going to oil fill. Little overkill but then I will have a little higher TBN starting out.

purduepurdy,
My filter company states that it filters to 1 micron and to change it 250-500 hrs. If yours is about the same your 6000 miles of 95% town driving is about 300 hrs. I would say it's time to dump it anyway. 6000miles/20mph avg= 300hrs.
