Allison or Mercedes AT?

What is the better transmission (for snowplowing)? An allison or a mercedes? Guy I know wants to buy a chevy because it has an allison, but how much better is it. A chevy is like 4,000 dollars more than a comparable dodge. That could just about buy a transmission itself. Please no brand-loyal or biased opinions, just looking for facts. Want to know which tranny is truly better. Thanks

Which Mercedes transmission? So far as I know Dodge makes the auto in their trucks. The manual in the Dodges (G56) is made by Mercedes in Brazil, however.

A mechanic friend of mine told me repeatedly that the 48 RE auto was lasting longer and giving less problems in the Alberta oil patch than the Allison in chevy's were

I think he is confused about the G-56 and the Aisin 6 speed auto in the 6.7s.. so he is probably asking Aisin vs. Allison...

No, the Aisin is only in the 4500 and 5500 dodge NOT in the 2500 or 3500 which is a 68re (or something like that)

But the Mercedes tranny is the G56 which is a manual, which IMO wouldnt be fun to plow in, Id rather do the Dodge with the 5.9 cummins and 6 speed manual.

If he is talking about the 6speed auto in the 6.7 vs. the Duramax/ Ally Id go with the Chevy/ GMC, just because of the engine. I still dont trust the 6.7cummins with all the emissions crap. Tranny wise there both Excellent trannys so you cant go wrong with either Auto tranny, if thats the deciding factor.

Yeah, I must have been mistaken. I thought the new manual was made by getrag. Obviously I don't get out of my 1st gen much! So in a 3/4 ton truck, Alison or 48RE?

ok, i'm confused. I thought the 6 speed automatic in the 6.7 trucks was built by Aisin. But you're saying that it's a totally different transmission? So who builds the 6 speed auto in the 2500 and 3500 trucks?

Yes, the 4500/ 5500 (Aisin Tranny) and the 2500/3500 (68RFE) are different transmission's

I got this info off the site here. so yes you can get the aisin in the 2500-3500 trucks. mopar72

They have a different transmission than the 2500 & 3500 pickups have but they can be shifted manually if you want to. The gearshift has the D, 1, 2, 3 on the dash, and the end of the gearshift lever has a button that with the first push it goes into 5th and changes the shift pattern up, the second push puts it into "overdrive off", 4th gear. You can go up to and hold any gear and I guess shift them from first through sixth, although I can't understand why you would want to. The transmission on the cab and chassis is a Aisin while the one on the pickups is a 68RFE. Both are six speeds, the Aisin is a work truck type transmission and carrys a 180k mile warranty. I pull with mine every day and it gets the job done.

Mileage depends on loads, towing up to 24k runs between 9 and 13, running the truck empty, it weighs 9800 lbs, it gets between 15 & 16.

i have both... in the 1 ton pick up it is a 6 speed auto made by DODGE. it has P R N D on the gear shifter with a momentary toggle switch on the shift level to toggle through gears choosing however many you want to use, and has a button on the end which ONLY puts it in tow/haul...this changes the shift pattern, and locks out 6th gear...

In my 1 TON CAB AND CHASSIS it has the 6 spd AISIN. this trans has
P R N D 3 2 1 on the dash....this trans is made in japan and is one of the nicest ones i've ever driven... on the end of the shifter the button selects tow/haul which locks out 6th gear and changed the shift pattern to be more aggresive with t/c lockup and use of the exhaust brake....if you push it again it turns O/D off which locks out 5th and 6th gears....

i think they are both great trans missions...have 8'6" stainless V plow on pickup and 9'6" stainless V plow on C&C

hope this helps

The Aisin is a carbon copy of the allison 1000/2000 FWIW...

Allison and Aisin have many joint ventures in other parts of the world; not to mention the current heated arguments that are going on now between Allison and Aisin over copyright infringment. From what I understand the dodge 68rfe, aisin AS68rc and allison lct1000 are all good auto's.

(No im not saying that/making it up because im bitter now that dodge has formidable automatics)
