Air Intake Systems

Has anyone installed an air intake system such as Air Raid or K&N on their Cummins? I'm considering such a system for a little more power and MPG's but am undecided due to the conflicting opinions (pro and con) on installing them. Some even claiming they can damage your engine. I've used K&N filters on a Tundra and Tacoma but am hesitant about installing one on my Cummins due to being a diesel newbie.

All thoughts appreciated.

Do search for "intake systems" in the 3rd gen performance forum.

Unless your dealer is your brother in law or something, I don't think its worth the potential warranty voiding if you have a turbo problem. You won't get that much Hp or fuel economy improvement.

Buy the Quad standard box for $299 and take it out when you go to the dealer. You'll way more hp and fuel economy for the same amount of money and still be able to take it to the dealer (as long as he doesn't find out).

BHAF...

flows good amount of air, cleans the air as well as stock filter does... looks impressively large under the hood

Alot of guys are running cold air intakes on their trucks. As for an actual horsepower gain, you might see 5hpor what ever they claim or you might not, but that will all depend on your truck, the type of fuel, atmospheric pressure and a pile of other things.

I myself used a drop in AFE element, I was happy with the snappy response of the turbo due to increased airflow. But after 300km of driving on southern ONT roads i had to much particulate come thrue the filter onto the intake. This left a residue that i was not to fond of inside if the intake tube. This resulted in me removing the filter and going back to a stock element.

Really the only benifit that i can see with you installing a cold air intake on your truck will be the reusable filter element. But that has to be cleaned properly and also cared for properly.

really if are going to leave your truck stock then i would stick with fleet guard filters. or maybe go to a BHAF if you want to do the work of piecing together the parts.

The end of the day though it all depends on money, how much peer pressure your friends are putting on you to install the cool things, and what upgrades you want to do in the future.

Not sure if i helped any, but good luck with what ever you do and let us know which way you went.

I've been using the AIRAID with MIT and pre-filter since the truck was new. No residue, good response, high apparent quality, and reusable. Not as expensive as the full bore AFE system, but absolutely no complaints. Can't say the same for my experience with K&N and my 96PSD.

I too wondered about the many intakes on the market.

I asked many other members about it many times.

I contacted Volante as they would not contact me as promised by their website. They were useless and I could not recommend them for their absolute lack of customer service, lack of knowledge about their product line, and general incompetence in their sales department.

Then Quadzilla made a claim of up to 35 hp out of an 03,just by adding the quad intake kit, and he backed it up with dyno charts to boot!!! (on these forums).

With a million mile warranty, up to 35 hp gain, and a money back guarantee if not satisfied. I bit the hook and purchased a quad intake kit.

I never thought for one moment that I would say WoW you can really feel it in the pedal!

Living up to your claims is one thing but exceeding them is outstanding!!!

"RUNAMUK", You say you went with the Quad intake kit. A few questions for ya if you don't mind.. Did this kit come with a smoother tube and elbows, to eliminate the stock set with the baffles in them? Also, Did you get a box enclosure, or just a filter? I am interested because an Air intake is prob. he only mod Im gonna do to my truck after reading about all the probs with the boxes and warranties etc. I also like that you say you can notice a difference in the go pedal!! Also, where did you get it from. Thanks

planetdell,

Lots of opinions etc will be posted but we will ONLY sell the AFE Pro Guard 7 filters and intake as they are the only performance fliter that stops the dirt from getting into your engine. The element is a speical design, www.proguard7.com and does an excellent job. They have drop in filters, Stage I and Stage II intake systems. It is expensive as compared to some fo the others but when you look at the filtering performance, and size and design of the filters and the intake tubes you'll see why. Call us if you have any questions, and remember the reason to get an intake isn't HP, it's to allow the extra fuel added by mods to be mixed with the right amount of air for complete combustion, which overall does add some HP, but mostly keeps EGT's in check etc. Kind of like adding an exhaust system. Dyno graphs can be made to show HP improvements from adding a deer whistle on the front bumper if you want them to, get the intake for EGT's and spool up and you'll be happy with your decision etc.

When the regulars on BITOG are looking at a used oil analysis and they see high silicon they ask if the person is using a K&N or something similar, and usually they are.

I am also running the Volant cold air kit. I like it , it looks clean and coms with its own box so its completely sealed. Filtering isnt bad either, I just had an oil analysis done and I was at 6ppm which for the the flow that I am getting is not bad at all. Cost me $ 254.00, easy install.
