Air Filter Change Interval

How often "mileage wise" do most of you change your air filter, or do you go by the filter minder ?

Angry I don't trust the "Filter Minder"

I went 20,000 on my initial filter with the so-called "filter minder" indicator barely moving into the green zone. After picking it up from the dealer after the 15,000 mile service I noticed there were no fingerprints on the filter box (they obviously did not check it) so I decided to check it myself. It was a complete mess. I have no idea how any air was actually getting through the filter. I'm going to change mine (or at least manually check it) every 10,000 from now on. The filter minder installed on my truck is not worth @&%!

Did mine at 20K as well. I wouldn't believe that filter minder as far as I could throw it.

BTW, it was filthy; and the filter minder was saying "never mind".

I never saw any difference in fuel mileage from one air filter to the other either.

I'm changing my air and fuel filter every 10,000 miles. My mpg go up by 1 to 1.5 mpg after each change now(2 times). Still haven't gotten any fuel out of the fuel filter petcock though.

I had to get the "filter Minder" replaced because I could install a new right out of the box DC air filter install it and it would go to 45-65%. After they replaced it works just fine, it hasn't moved in 1 month

Here come the flames, but I have 62,500 on my 02 2500 and am still using the stock filter. I have looked about every 6 months or so after about 20k with no minder movement and blow it off with an air chuck when I do. Mileage is still the same as always, looks good and that minder has not budged. Granted, I am very seldiom in dusty conditions, but I never dreamed I would still be on this filter.

No flames from me. You're probably running a lot closer to the right change interval than anybody else I've read here. However, I would lay off the air hose blowing it out. You can damage the element that way.

People simply do not believe how much dirt an air filter can hold before it starts to restrict air flow to the point that the engine is affected.

I"ve got 12k on my truck and haven't even looked at the filter minder yet. It sees mostly highway use and I'm guessing it won't show any restriction until 25K and probably won't need a filter until 40k or 50k. Maybe not even then.

BTW, a filter covered in dirt is working just fine; in fact, it's doing a better job of filtering than a new one.

All that said about a dirty filter is true, however for those of you that have not replaced your filter yet. DC has changed the filter and added a gauze pre-filter to the filter because they found out that they were cleaning as good as they shoud have been

I tossed the filter-minder and installed a barbed fitting.(and capped it of course).I will be installing a vacuum gauge in the cab, probally near the brake release,so I can keep a eye on how filter loading changes in time and foul weather.. This may not be that big of a concern with the factory box,but with mods water and large debri can affect the filter fast. The service manual give some specs on the filter-minder pressure ratings, wich seem awful low to me ! 26" for change out or red zone on scale........... Won't be letting mine go that far. Also, talking about filter change intervals is like talking about how often we wash our winshields,,,,Depends on, well, let's see,oh, just about everything.

I junked the factory set-up and replaced it with the aFe Pro-7 Magnum Force. The factory filter was clean at 10K. There is no set interval for the change, you will not get as much dirt driving the interstates as you would driving in fields and gravel.

My first 0-3 I only got 11K and it was pretty nasty. THis one now has 14K on it and filter is real good. On the surface anyway.

Filter minder, Forget it.

I rate how well my filter is working on turbo whistle. If I can hear it sing at 70 mph, filter is still working well. And, I have the silencer ring installed.

Did you install the in cab vacuum gauge yet.
I've been thinking about doing that also.
What do you think would work best, about 0 to 30 HG, or bigger?
I have no idea what the vacuum would be at 75 or 80 MPH with a filter that needs changed.
I would like to find one that sort of matched the rest.
