Post Ahhh, the vibrations...

A few weeks ago I started getting this Squeaking coming from the tail end (20MPH to 0) when coming to a stop. -One week later...Gone.

Then I notice it started the squeaking when reversing...That lasted a few days then disappeared.

A few days go bye, then one night I jump in the truck and as soon as I hit ~45-50 MPH and right up to 70, the truck starts vibrating like a tire is out of balance. I feel it in my butt but also in the steering wheel. Even the wife started making comments.

80 or so miles later I start up the CTD and put it in reverse and get this BANG from the rear end...One thing I hate is random problems...BREAK and be found! But NOOO. Its all better now...No more Vibrations again...

Then I figure, Ok some research is needed...Figure from all the posts about the 3rd gen, Vibration would come up in a search...Yup...

I called the dealer this morning- explained the above and when I got to the "BANG" part he said "So did anything hit the floor"...

"Uhh, No, -should it have" I said. "I've got a trailer to tow to Penn. this Sat so I need my truck"...

"Sounds like a U-Joint" he says...."Um Hum", I say while trying to put on a fake smile...

"Drop it off Thursday and well see if we can get that done for you before the weekend"...

Gee- You sure you guys can get a U-joint in in two days?....

At the end of it I ask why isn't there a zerk fitting for greasing the U-Joints?

Well its more "COST EFFECTIVE".... I said for who, Dodge?
-He just laughed...

Actually for the most part I found out so far on my u/joint search main reason non greaseable is strength. There stronger.

Thats what has been posted and the u/joint manufactues claim.I talked not in depth but a fair amount with a AAM engineer two days ago. When a joint is made with bores in it to lube by zerk it is not considered as strong as a soild unit.Made sense to me.

If you are under warranty let them fix it. If not, put a set of spicers in it and be done for a long time. Tell, Tell sign of a ujoint going out is reddish orange dust on the joint. If you pull the driveshaft out the joints should move freely with no binding. If it binds then you will get a vibration and the clunk sound or just one or the other. Just remember how they had the carrier bearing shimmed. Goof it up and you will eat the carrier bearing over time.
