Aftermarket Lift Pump Suggestions

I suppose I need to keep an eye in this lift pump failure/injector pump leaking situation.

Some of you suggest replacing the lift pump with a better than OEM pump.

Will you make some reccomendations?

My neighbor took his truck in to a local mechanic for a lift pump and the mechanic told him they didn't make them anymore and he had to take it to Dodge for an in-the-tank pump.

My truck is a 2005.

I did a post on my system a while back. You might want to look it up. There are other ways too.

BTW: I am not machining the banjo bolts for sale. I don't know where to buy them. I also don't know how to wire the Dodge trucks for an external pump. I have a Ford and it was already set up for an external pump.

Your truck (05) has an in-tank fuel pump, your friends pump (pre-05) was engine mounted and is no longer in production for DC. DC now wants all the engine mounted trucks coming in for lift pump problems under warranty to go with the in-tank system. That is the reason they told your friend what they did.

When you visit your dealer, ask him where the pressure relief is on the in tank pump system. And then tell us.

The CP3 is a constant displacement pump. When you try to pump more fuel through it than it needs, the pressure skyrockets. There is no pressure relief on the Cummins fuel filter assemblies like there is on the Powerstroke fuel filter assemblies. If the pump runs when the key is on but the engine isn't running, there is no place for the fuel to go. Result: cooked LP. Next up: CP3. Faulty engineering.

So now they move the LP into the tank. Still no pressure relief, except if it is in the pump itself. Problem with that is that the fuel just circulates inside the pump itself. Eventually overheats. And the pressure setting has to be low PSI. So if the fuel filter gets dirty the CP3 starves. Result: burnt out lift pump and fried CP3.
